Can't read the serial number. Can these casting #'s tell me the year of my 8N.?

I can't read my serial number on the block. I found these casting numbers on the rear axles.
LH axle #8N4013B2
RH axle #8N4012B2
I was told it was a '52. It has ford in red letters on the hood, but it doesn't have ford in red letter on the fenders? Why?
Is there anyother way I can tell the year without being able to read the serial number on the block?
Thanks guys.

Crawl under the tractor with a rag and a flashlight. Clean the grime off the hyd reservoir pan right by the drain plug. There should be a date there. That's the date the pan was cast but it should give you a rough idea.

Those are part numbers, not any use in identifying the model year. If you do an archive search for "casting dates" you'll find a lot of info about this subject. Here's some text from a post I've repeated here before:

One of the recent posts sent me back to my notes from the rebuild of my '50 8N two years ago.
Here's the casting dates information that I recorded then. The legend for the code is, as I understand it, like this:
Month=A (Jan), B (Feb), etc.
Day = one or two digit number.
Year = one digit number.

But some of the codes are the mm/dd/yy format.

So, in my case, the number on the head, A190, is Jan. 19, 1950.

Here's what I found:

Head A190 (between the #2 and #3 plug holes).
Oil pan A250 (bottom).
Hydraulic pump 2/7/50 (bottom)
Tranny case B30 (right side, forward, low).
Right axle housing 1-13-50.
Rear end housing B30 (left side under PTO shaft, upside down).
Engine B20, on starter bump out.

This is serial # 257591. The range is Jan 13 to Feb 7, a pretty tight grouping.

_____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

The '52 should have the Ford script on the fenders if they are original... they were added to the fenders sometime in 1950 I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you have a 1952 model, you should have a tachometer/hour meter on the lower right side of your dash, and the generator should be on the left front (sitting in seat) of the engine. On the right front you should have the distributor. Those are major changes from the pre-mid-1950 models which had no tach, distributor in the middle front of engine behind radiator, and generator on right front of engine.

The casting dates won't give you an exact date that the tractor was assembled but will get you in the neighborhood. If all parts are original, you know it wasn't assembled before one of the parts was cast. However, it's not uncommon for parts to be replaced and therefore you may find casting dates that seem out of sync with the other casting dates. Same is true with the engine...it could have been replaced and the serial number not make any sense with the casting dates.

Good luck.

Thanks, I just got the 8N homw last night and was wondering what year it was. It does have the proof/hour meter. The rear fenders don't have the ford script in them. I will check the date on the Hydraulic Res. Pan today.
