The local Green dealer has these on his lot. Any recommendations or experiences? What's a good price.

I go and visit them tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Befco 5' finish cut 3 point hitch mower that I bought new in 1986 and have used hard all these years for a 7 acre lawn. I have replaced the blades two times, the belts once, and two of the outrigger wheels. It has given excellent service for almost 20 years. What more can I say.

I have had a 6 foot cut befco finish mower and mowed three acres with it for ten plus years now. I love it. It seems made strong. My greese fittings are a little hard to get at. Just changed belts for the first time, I had broke one hitting dirt. I also had worn out the center of the wheels. Seems the greese fittings put the greese on the outside of an internal bushing, the axle went throung the inside of the bushing. I greesed and greesed and she still squealed. Finnaly fugured out problem when I tore them appart to repair them. I used a larger bolt for the axle, grade five, 5/8, I think, and I threw away the bushings. Now the greese gets right on the axle. No more problems. Who designs this stuf? But overall I am very happy with the construction of the mower, the parts cost and availability. I replaced an external bearing once, it took the most abuse hitting things like roots and such. No other problems. I think the price may be about $1,200 to maybe $1,500. I would buy a 5 foot for an N serries tractor.

My brother just bought a 6' Kingkutter for QF&F for $770. I have looked at them a little and they really seem to be fairly well made. I think the 5" would go for a little under $700 if you can find a store that has one. They are 30% off. I don't even know if you can buy any brand with a made in USA gearbox but that used to be a big part of the price difference with the big brands.

Good luck,

Ken

My Dad has a Befco mower similar to that one he uses with his Deere. Good mower, but nothing spectacular to justify the higher cost. I contend he was conned into over spending by the Green dealer. I have a 5' Howse. Got it out of the box for $500. Works good, a little noisier than the Befco or a 'Hog. It has been through some abuse (hey where did that pile of rocks come from, etc.) and still holds up real well.

have had a befco for 9 years and its held up very well. Taken a lot of unintended abuse and is still strong. Is a bit noisy in the gears, but other than that no complaints

Hi Popster,
I have a 5' Bushog brand finish mower that I like a lot. I think I over-paid for it as some of the guys are saying that they bought King-Kutters for some less. I paid about $1,300. approx. 4 years ago.
As with any machine, you want to be able to grease it a lot so check to see that everything has a grease fitting. I can see in the picture that the Befco has the same plastic cover caps on top to grease the blade spindles like my Bushog. How about the wheels and shafts? Do the wheels have bushings or ball bearings? My Bushog has a 10 year warranty on the Gearbox. What does the Befco have? Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

I have an older model 5' cut C-15 Befco. I bought it used several years ago and it's been a good mower. They are made in Rocky Mount, NC, and are a fairly high-end mower. The local Deere dealer sells Befco equipment and that dealer only sells the expensive stuff. I had to replace a couple of wheels when the hubs wore out, and the dealer had the parts for me in a day or so. When I first bought the mower, I called Befco and they sent me an owner's manual, no charge, and also a set of new decals for free. Very nice folks.

Where is it made? What would be better the air or the solid tires. I know you don't have to worry about flats with the solid tires so what would be the advantage of air tires? I plan to buy a rear discharge 6 ft finish mower in the spring.
