I put a completely new starter from NAPA in my 8n, but it only works fine if I do "not" tighten it all the way up. If I leave it about a 1/16" loose it works fine but kinda wiggles when turning over. Now what did I do wrong. They told me when I picked it up not to turn the gear part but it was a little tricking getting in. Could it have turned? Thanks in advance for all the great information.

Since the starter, bendix & soleniod came as one unit and the old style is no longer available then the starter I have would be the new improved one? If N so, would this problem be caused by the rebuilder? Lost at this point and Thanks!!!!

Paul..... .not necessarily so. If'n there is only one pin hole in the starter shaft, its WRONG. And the only way yer gonna know is to "un-pin" the bendix drive and look. (the're hidden under the starter drive)

Howsomever.....if'n its got the new and improved "clutch" drive, its the outer hole, if'n theres 2 hole it the starter shaft.

There are major external physical differences between the spiral screw bendix drive and the clutch drive. Its not an obscure or sophisticated differentiation.

Since you seem uncertain about things, take it back and complain 'cuz it should fit solid into the housing and it ain't..... ...Dell

It is either a rebuild problem (too long of bushings or too many thrust washers) or the end plates are rotated slightly, there is a small dowel pin at each end that should be in a depression.

Paul..... ...umm....tricky...Obviously, ya want the starter bolted solid fer 2 reason, electrical, and mechanical torque reactive (meaning the starter has some purchase to turn against).

I'm guessing that you used the replacement screw drive Bendix vice the No Longer Available OEM Bendix drive. If'n thats the case, the bendix pin-hole into the starter shaft should be about 1/2" closer to the windings. This means, correctly done, you should have 2 bendix pin holes and use the one closest to the windings.

Howsomever...I really recommend the improved "clutch" starter drive. Slightly more expensive, a whole lot better, and mounts in the OEM starter pin-hole..... .....Dell
