Fan belt - anyone else ever have this problem?

This is probably a simple problem for the folks on this board but I'm no mechanic so I have to ask. I resently replaced the fan belt on my '54 NAA (not broken, just old). Everything was fine until I noticed that the ammeter was pegged all the way right(+). No problem with discharging so I continued running. Next I hear a loud banging like the fan belt had broken. When I shut it down I found that the actual pully wall had sheared off (worn all the way through by the belt). This is the drive shaft pully which is really just a sheet metal piece on the NAA. I replaced the pully (a whole story in itself) and reinstalled the belt this time taking care not to tension it too tight. Ran it again this weekend and got the same problem with the ammeter, checked the pully and sure enough the outside wall is getting a grove worn in. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help, I realy do appreciate this resource.

Phil, Those belts are not only different lengths but have different tapers (that may not be the right word). The "taper" is the angle of the sidewall of the belt. I believe the part number call out on the taper is the letter A, B, or C. It may be that the belt matches one pulley but not both. That may cause the wear you are seeing. You need to confirm that the belt is not only the proper length but the proper taper. The Ford dealer can tell you the proper belt number. If you have a belt with an incorrect taper you will have to get the correct belt. Then you need to determine whether the generator pulley matches the correct belt.

Phil,

My 53 NAA Jubilee came with a stock generator with the wrong pully and belt. I replaced the pully and belt with the correct parts (and regulator, and wiring, and...). The belt alignment should form near perfect plane (nice and flat). The belt is rather wide, and should completely fill the V of the pullys.

I would check the regulator first. It is not easy to remove, but you can take the cover off and visually inspect it (mine had partially melted). There is a procedure for checking with a VOM, but I don't have that handy.

If your ammeter gauge is pegged in the charge postion, you have a bad regulator and its making your generator/alternator work overtime and could shorten the life of all electrical components including the battery..Use a voltmeter and check the battery voltage when the tractor is running..
This could also cause undue wear on the fan belt.
But is sounds like an alignment problem on the pully..

I have an NAA that I just changed
to 12V. The alternator had a different
pully than the old generator, but I have not experienced any problems. The old belt was reused. I only tensioned the belt by pulling out
on the alternator. I did not use any
kind of pry bar and was able to get
about a half to three-quarter-inch
belt deflection. It has been about
two months now without any problems.

Best Regards,
Tim

You might check the alignment of the generator.
I have seen and heard of generators with the wrong mounting or pully. This could put stress on the front groove.
My 8N has this problem with an aparently stock generator. I have not seen any problems but it seems like it might put sterss on the bearings or belt.

Hi Phil,
I haven't had the problem, but it sounds like the wrong size belt. The correct belt should fit evenly in the pully so that you get uniform contact. Just a thought. Good luck.
