8n Overheated, now won't start

Forgive me, for I have broken my '51 8N. I've only had it for a few months and I didn't mean to do damage...

A few days ago, my lower radiator hose sprang a BIG leak (came into contact w/ fan belt). It was dark, and I didn’t notice it immediately. I don’t know how hot the engine got. Since the water was hitting the fanbelt, it got "sprayed" all over the engine.

With a replacement hose (of the right type this time) in place, I can’t get the engine to run. It “fires” like it wants to go, but it won’t catch and run. The best analogy I can make is that it’s acting like it’s flooded. As I crank it, it’ll sound like it starts to go, but never quite makes it.

I get gas to the carb. I even tried starter fluid to no avail. I’ve checked for spark and it seems a little weak to me. However, I am getting a bit of life from the engine during cranking.

Any suggestions/ideas about what’s wrong? I thought about trying to pull-start it, but I don’t have another tractor handy. (It's a long story, but I can't get close to the tractor without sinking my Explorer in mud. I know that via experience...)

Thanks,

Russ Nichols

The last time I ran my 2N I noticed my water pump is leaking. Got a little coolant on the distributer. This morning it wouldn't start. Weak sparkies. Took the cap off the dist and wiped everything dry. Fired right up and ran good for 2 1/2 hours after that.

Russ..... .. well, ya ain't the firstest one to ever run their engine outta coolant.

Recommend you use 50/50 anti-freeze on refillup.

The biggest worry ya gotts is a "warped" cylinderhead. I'd strongly suggest as a first measure, retorque all the cylinderhead bolts to 65 ft/lbs in the proper sequence, starting at the center of the head and spiraling outward clockwize. Often times ya ken flatten it out enuff if'n yer lucky.

The almost start syndrome is somewhat symptomatic of low compression, and maybe with a retorque, ya might be lucky. Don't be too surprized if'n ya really blew yer headgasket. The next step toward recovery is to check the compression. Don't skip it 'cuz thats the only way you'll know. Dry then wet. If'n ya don't understand what that entails, please enquire for clarification.

Now then, if'n yer further unlucky, ya probably "flooded" it. And modern no lead gasoline leaves deposits on the sparkplug insulators and all the sparkies leak off. Only cure is brand new sparkplugs, besides they're not "that" expensive. Check the gap for 0.025, they're not always correctly gapped outta the box.

If'n ya still have problelms starting, please re-post with additional information. We care..... .Dell

Russ

I would pull the distributor cap off and make sure it and the points are dry. You can get some spray stuff to spray in and displace any moisture.
My 8N is not tolerant of any water getting sprayed around the ignition parts.

Good luck

Bill
