Me again. I have some ORC questions. First, I've heard stories that the part of the ORC that goes against the threads for the PTO cap can wear these threads down to nothing, and ruin them. Is this true, and if so, is it ok to take a saw and cut this piece of the ORC off? With the relatively little use my ORC will get, I'd much rather save the threads so the PTO cap will fit. Second, is it nesessary to use the ORC when using all PTO powered equipment, instead of just a brush hog?

I've used both the common "Hub City" style ORC (which is held in place with a pin) and the quick-connect style, which disconnects by pushing a release button like most PTO shafts. Neither one has any problem with clearing the threads.

I really prefer the quick-connect ORC since that makes it very easy to remove the clutch and replace the cap. The cap is a good idea for safety reasons, to keep the shaft clean, and even to keep the concrete dry if your rear shaft seal leaks.

I have had the same ORC on my tractor for 13 years now. I use it with the post hole digger as well as the bushhog. No problems and it really doesn't get in the way of any other implements that I use-back blade, scoop, rake, pallet lifter, boom, and trailer. I used to grease it before the zerk broke off. I think that was 7 years ago.

68Mag, I don't think you have to saw anything off to remove the ORC. Unscrew the grease fittings punch out the roll pin that holds on the ORC. Pull off the ORC. Best of luck.

Thanks, but I wasnt asking about removing it. Sorry for any misunderstanding. I meant could I saw off the part of the ORC that would rub the threads for the PTO cap, so that the threads wouldnt be damaged by my use of the ORC.

Hi:
I think if the ORC is rubbing against the threads on the housing, the PTO shaft bearing might be bad. If bearing is ok and the ORC rubs the threads on your particular setup maybe you could grind a little off the ORC to get some clearance. Just some thoughts....

68, I haven't had any problems with my ORC since installing it about six months ago. Mine didn't interfere with the PTO cap threads. What I've heard people comment on was the wear noticed on the PTO shaft splines - and those are frequently worn long before the ORC was ever put on the tractor. (Don't forget to grease the ORC). As far as various equipment goes, the brush cutter is likely the most problematic with transfering momentum of the blades into additional forward movement of the tractor, but I'm not too familiar with other types of equipment that might also enjoy the safety benefits of the ORC.

I don't know about cutting the ORC, it's pretty tough stuff. When I was changing the oil seal at the pto, I noticed the threads on mine are shot. No way to put a cap on it any longer. Maybe there's another type of ORC out there that will not damage the tractor. Too late for me!

My orc damaged the threads for the cap. Only because the shaft splines were worn bad and this allowed the orc to wobble a little on the shaft. Rubbing the threads gone! I wish there was a way to put a cap on again as the only thing I really us on the back of mmine is a blade. Chris #280729

I hate to say this but check the archives. I know other members of this most wonderful board have posted pictures of alternative pto covers. If I remember right, most were connected to the 6 bolts that hold the pto shaft in.
