Paint Wheels Before or After Mounting Tires?

I ordered a set of Titan Turf tires for my N and have a spare set of wheels to mount them on (so I can switch back & forth). The wheels need to be painted. Tire dealer says they will get scratched & chipped during the mounting. I would rather avoid masking etc. What would you do?
PS: I have wanted a tire like this for a long time and I would not have known that they were available without the wealth of knowlege this board provides. Thanks to All!

Another trick I picked up is to take a paintbrush and get yourself some liquid palmolive dishsoap, and then coat the tire with the stuff. Paint the rim, let it dry, and then just hose off the tire. paint comes off clean as a whistle :-)

Done it both ways on two sets of rims/wheels. It works both ways, and depends on your approach.

With the tire off, it's a good opportunity to thoughly clean up the rust and grind or wire brush them clean and then prime to help protect from further rust.

With tires remove and with a hardened paint or standard rattle can paint it won't matter, a small amount of chipping or scratching will occur. Not enough to think twice about.

On the 9N I was more thorough than the 850 and chose to remove the tires, and sandblast, etch, and POR 15 the rims and painted then painted over the exteriors. That should protect them from rusting out over the years, as well prior to all that I dipped them in a kiddy pool of phosphoric acid to neutralize the rust on the inside of the 32" rims (if there was any).

Touching up after mounting was a minor job.

I found that painting with the tire on a minor hassle, more in line with cleaning up the rubber from overspray. But not enough to be a pain...

A little trick is to use drywall tape and lay the tire flat on the ground. Let the tape stand on it's end around the rim and spray paint. It gives you a two inch border. You could also use rags around the outside of the tape, just as a precaution. Sure beats masking or cleaning. Rob

I put new rear tires on my 2N last spring when I got it. One rim was shot so I bought one new one and the other I had sandblasted. Both are the new 6 lug type. I primed and painted both rims before I put the tires on. The tires are surprisingly easy to put onto the rim yourself. With the rim ON the tractor I used lots of dish soap to lube them down and then just kicked the tire onto the rim. The last little bit is the hard part but I used a 1x2 pine stick that I rounded the edges on to pry it on. Didn't hurt my paint at all. Be careful that you don't pinch the tube with the stick.

Like the 'dog' says, New tires on clean rims are EASY to mount. Clean and paint the rims first.

I'd paint with a quality paint and hardener and then mount the tires.
If you do get some chipps just touch them up and call it good.
If the turf tires will be your main 'workers' for the summer, they are going to get chips and dings in the paint sooner or later anyway...

I painted mine without masking and cleaned overspray right away with solvent and plenty of rags to keep the solvent clean. I had old tires but the solvent not only cleaned the paint, it cleaned the tires making them look new.
