The front axle support pin and bushing are shot on my '54 NAA. No problem getting a new bushing and pin but the hole in the axle has become egg shaped - not really bad but certainly out of round. What would be the best plan of attack here?

You could take the center axle to a good machine shop and they could weld and rebore for the bushing. Another option would be to look for a good center axle in a bone yard.

I've tried the bore-and-bushing cure on a 9N front axle. Problem was, the constant rubbing and impact had made the surface of the bore as hard as a taxman's heart - I just couldn't get it to cut, even with a carbide tool - it would jump and jitter around on the surface. This might work well if you have access to an ID grinder.

Llamas, sounds like it has work hardened and needs annealed. Just heat it up red hot and let it cool real slow (in a bucket of lime or sand) and it'll cut then, probably with high speed tools. Shouldn't hurt a thing and solves a meanie. I've got to do the bushing thing to one of mine too. Thanks for reminding me to check mine with a file before I go to the trouble of setting it up in machine. Fred

Yeah, coulda done that. But I'm thinking it's a forging, and I didn't care to have the middle be so soft and the ends so hard - relatively speaking. So I got a boneyard piece for $25 and called it good. By the time I'd made a bushing and welded it in and cleaned it up, it wasn't worth my time.

But if there's no alterantive, annealing it would work. I think I'd be inclined to heat just the bore real hot, then let it cool by transmission out through the rest of the forging - keep the heat-affected zone to a minimum.

llamas, wonder what would happen if you tried to anneal the axle?

I'd guess it to be off the C scale and into D.
