Hey Guys,

I've thought about this for awhile. We who own N's agree that the brakes leave much to be desired (especially since I ran into my Troy Bilt when I couldn't stop quick enough!) Anyway, after seeing all those retrofit disc brake kits available for old cars and trucks, I was wondering why something similar couldn't be done to 9's, 2's and 8's. Might have to take off the brake drum, but why couldn't it be done? The calipers could be rigged mechanically if hydraulics turned out to be a pain. Zane?.....

Ron

Except for motorcycles and karts (which have a low demand for braking force/total weight) you'll normally see disk brkes have power assist. Drum brakes, despite all of their shortcomings, have an advantage in this area. Due to their geometry (where the shoe pivot is compared to the shoe-drum contact point) the leading shoe recieves a power boost from the rotating drum. When the leading shoe contacts the drum the friction force tries to rotate the shoe around it's pivot pressing it harder into the drum. Taking this geometry to the extreme the brake becomes self locking and can only be released by backing off the drum. Usable brakes are a compromise of low petal force without lockup. Disks don't have this advantage.

Properly maintained the brakes on an 8N will slide either or both tires any time I ask them to. Once you loose traction nothing short of anti lock brakes is going to do you any good.

Your mileage may vary

My father-in-law has an IH 300 with disk brakes and they have no effect whatever, and they have been replaced twice that I know of. No matter what type, if they are not maintained PROPERLY, they don't work. Thanks, I'll keep mine the way thay are.

Kinda like a 12v conversion...a way to avoid proper maintenence. If the seals are replaced, the shoes replaced, and drums surfaced, you will get years of good stopping/turning out of your N brakes. Pete

My 8 N tractor brakes will stop me as good as any-one's and are properly maintained, but to say get good years of stopping / turning out of N brakes is a little far fetched. try put 5 ton of hay on a wagon pushing you down a hill, using two pushrod brakes, I'm sure there has to a better and safer system. Granted before hydraulic brakes were installed in automobiles they also used pushrod brakes, and people say cars these days aren't built like the old cars of days ago, I say thank god for that.

The brakes on my 2N will lock up even if I did put 10000lbs behind her, but once they lock, she'd slide, and I'd wish that I hooked that 10000lbs to the back of the JD 70, the Super M, or even the DC like I knew I should have. I went for a ride once on the 2N with a small running gear and 50 bales on the back. Down that hill with 5 tons behind the N, and the brakes of an Amtrak engine couldn't stop it from sliding!
