I went to change the transmission fluid in my 8N and the front plug is rounded off. I tried to put a pipe wrench on it and it just slips off! I've been cusing the guy I bought her from for a hour. What would you suggest I do next. Should I take a grinder to it and flatten two sides of the plug? adn maybe try the pipe wrench again.? Or should I jack up the front end and flush it out with diesel fuel and just fill it back up with hydraulic fluid and forget about it? I could feel a little sludge in the back plug hole? Any suggestions would be helpful. I will try her again tomorrow when I cool off.
thanks.

Heat the plug to a cherry red , then it should come out easy !

get a big pipe wrench with good teeth, put it on tight, put a metal pipe on the end of the wrench, should break loose pretty easy. very seldom have i had a pipe wrench to slip.

I agree...If the pipe wrench is not gripping...something is wrong with the wrench.
I do not think I have ever had a pipe wrench slip...on anything...

I too couldn't get mine off, even when I had my pump off the tractor, ended up chisling half the plug off, never did get it out. Mine too was rounded, it was suggested before on this board another way to do it is to drill a hole in the middle and re tap it with a smaller drain plug,(car size)I done that and that worked fine. Since then I got a new used pump that the plug is okay, when my pump flew apart, worth thinking about.

Rick: you'll save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you take a fairly heavy cold chisel and tap the edge vertically in a couple of places. Just get a small indentation started and tap. You're going to replace the plug anyway so damage is no issue. You can have it off in three minutes with this approach.

If you are unable to loosen it using one of the methods suggested, "carefully" welding(TIG is best) a bolt, nut, or section of rod to the head of a frozen or damaged plug will often allow it to be removed. God luck...Al English

Hi Rick,
I had exactly the same problem. The corners were broken off and a pipe wrench couldn't grab it.
I didn't think about grinding first and probably should have. Anyway, I took a small cold chisel and tapped the outside edge of the plug several times. This loosened the plug enough to grab it with a big pair of vise-grips and remove it. Good luck.

Thanks guys,
I am going to first try and grind two flat sides on the plug. If that doesn't work I will try and weld a big nut on it. I didn't know if I could buy a new drain plug or not. I will call my Ford dealer tomorrow. Thanks....

Rick you could take a hydralic jack with a peice of flat metal on the top of the jack the pipe wrench tight on the nut so it can't push away and slip, break the plug loose remove the jack and finish removing the plug. Then you could fix the plug off the tractor. Mark H.
