I have a 52 8n that is still 6v, it starts and runs fine. I have headligts on it and they do what I need them to do. I was thinking of adding a rear work light to the N.

Would the addition of the 3rd light be a bit too much for the 6v system...would it draw down too much and not really provide much light?

I know the work light was an option...but does it tax the 6v too much?

Thanks.

Sal-
I have two front lights, a work light with separate switch on the rear of the right fender and a tail light on the rear of the left fender.
Never had any problems.

Our '51 came with 3 lights. The rear work light has a switch in the pot. We never had any problem with using all three. We always worked the tractor at 3/4 throttle or higher, often wide open throttle.
Keep your rpm's up and if the electrical system is in good condition, it should be ok.

Just hook it into the head lights and put a switch on the rear light housing. I run 3 lights and it dose bring the charge rate down close to zero but I have not had any problems so far. Mark H.

Hi Mark, Your charging rate should drop to almost zero as your battery is charged by the generator, if it doesn't, then it is overcharging and you should replace your regulator or adjust the current limiter on the regulator. As long as the total amperage rating of the accessories doesn't exceed the rated output of the generator you shouldn't have any problem maintaining the battery charge. Mike

It runs at a bout +3to+4 amps with the battry charged and when I turn the lights on it goes to about +1 amp Mark H.

Thought more about what I just said, this is after starting it and running it for a haft hour or so working. Never had to charge the battry or add water in 3-months so far. Starts fine with out any block heater this winter. Battry is a few years old too. It must be charging OK after starting it 70-80 times so far in 3-mos. of owning it?? Mark H.

Mark,
3 or 4 amps on the gauge won't hurt it, the gauge error could be that much, when its over charging 10 or 15 amps it'll fry your batt. Sounds like yours is doing OK.

Another alternative is what I did; I used an over-the-counter 2-position auto headlight switch which has one position for parking lights, and another for headlights. Wire your headlights into the first position, and the rear worklight into the second. In operation, pull the headlight knob out halfway for headlights, or all the way out for headlights + worklight.

When I first bought my tractor, the light switch was shot. So I went to the auto parts store and bought a two-way switch that I intended to wire up to have either the front lights or back light on but not simultaneously. To clarify, if the switch was in the up posistion ony the front lights would be on. If the swirch was in the down posision then only the back light would be on. Then I thought about it - how many times would you need to have both on? The answer is most of the time if you have to back up or whatever. Ask yourdelf, do you really want to keep switchiung lights on and off when you are adjusting the tracor while backing up? Also, the back light does provide safety at night if you are driving on the road. So, I rigged it up so all the lights go on in the up position and don't use the down posision. I'm glad I did. There is no effect on performance even with 6V. Don't worry about it. Run em all!

Box.

The reason I have a switch on my rear light is so when I am on the road and someone is behind me at night or dark I can turn it off as not to blind them. Otherwise I leave it on. Mark H.
