1. I had the exact same noise, same symptoms with the clutch, from my 50 8N. When I tore it down to rebuild the engine, I also disassembled the transmission and replaced the bearings. Now it's quiet again. The noise didn't start out loud; it took a couple of years to get annoying to the point I was ready to do something about it. 2. Where to start? Well, this was the first engine or transmission I ever tore down and rebuilt. I was a total novice, but with good manuals and lots of help from this board it went very smoothly (not fast, but smoothly). I put it back together and it cranked up on the first try and a year later no problems. You will have to split the tractor, remove the steering assembly, etc. Once you've pulled everything out of the tranny, a machine shop will have the tools to remove the bearings and races and replace them. Won't cost a fortune. You won't need any exotic tools to do your part. If you have the time and resources (a place to work, a few tools) you can do it yourself. If you can't take the time, don't have a place, etc., then ask around for an experienced Ford shop and take it in. A word of caution, the FEVER can set in if you do it yourself. Now I'm rebuilding a 1944 Farmall H, and there's the 1949 Massey Harris 30 waiting in line... Good luck. Don
