8N Tranny?? Noise--Need a Prescription

I need a dose of advice from one of you good doctors about a tranny(?) noise I've started hearing lately. I've been thru the archives and haven't found quite what I have, so here we go.
First, there is a grinding or growling sound that has become noticeable on my 50 8N. Might be a bad bearing sound maybe? The noise is present only when the cluth is engaged (pedal out), but it's there with the tractor moving in any gear or sitting still in neutral. It makes no difference whether the pto shaft is engaged or disengaged--noise is always there as long as the cluth is engaged. I used the long screwdriver on the thumb, against the ear test to try to localize the source, and the noise seems to be loudest near the front of the tranny case. While using the screwdriver I can also hear a slight clicking sound there. Second, if we know what's wrong where should I start on it. I have never had to undertake a major mechanical project on my baby before and have to admit that I'm more than a little intimidated about the prospects.
Thanks for any suggestions in advance. norm(wy)

Norm; The most likely causes are throwout bearing or input shaft bearing. The throwout bearing usually stops making noise with pressure from the clutch pedal. If the noise stops as you press down lightly on the pedal and the PTO keeps on keepin on, the throwout bearing is the likely culprit. If the noise stays until the time the PTO stops, then the tranny bearings are more likely. Even if you decide the problem is in the tranny replace the throwout bearing and consider replacing the clutch disk - you don't want to have to go back in there a year from now if things are getting old and worn (at least I don't - I like playing with them not fixing them)

1. I had the exact same noise, same symptoms with the clutch, from my 50 8N. When I tore it down to rebuild the engine, I also disassembled the transmission and replaced the bearings. Now it's quiet again. The noise didn't start out loud; it took a couple of years to get annoying to the point I was ready to do something about it.

2. Where to start? Well, this was the first engine or transmission I ever tore down and rebuilt. I was a total novice, but with good manuals and lots of help from this board it went very smoothly (not fast, but smoothly). I put it back together and it cranked up on the first try and a year later no problems. You will have to split the tractor, remove the steering assembly, etc. Once you've pulled everything out of the tranny, a machine shop will have the tools to remove the bearings and races and replace them. Won't cost a fortune. You won't need any exotic tools to do your part. If you have the time and resources (a place to work, a few tools) you can do it yourself. If you can't take the time, don't have a place, etc., then ask around for an experienced Ford shop and take it in.

A word of caution, the FEVER can set in if you do it yourself. Now I'm rebuilding a 1944 Farmall H, and there's the 1949 Massey Harris 30 waiting in line...

Good luck.
Don
