I have a 2N with a starter problem. When I try to start the tractor about one in ten times it just whines and grinds and then the motor is locked up. If I try to continue to attempt to start it, more whine and grind. The only way I can get it started again is to rock the tractor in gear until something lets go and then it starts right up. When it was locked up I tried to remove the starter but it was caught and would only come out about a quarter of an inch after removing the bolts. I tried to remove it when it wasn't locked up but then the Bendix wouldn't fit through the hole. What is wrong and how do I remove the starter?

I think you are going to find that the gear teeth on the flywheel ring gear are worn off where the engine stops each time the engine is shut down. An engine will always stop at the same spot on the ring gear nearly every time and so it wears out the teeth at this place.
The starter should be pulled after the engine has successfully been started with the starter so that the starter drive will be in the run position. If you hit the starter and the engine does not start the starter drive will be in the start position and will not come through the hole in the housing.
If the teeth on the flywheel ring gear are in fact worn off you are going to have to break the tractor into or else park on a hill from now on. The starter will be easy to take off when the tractor is broken into.

I always learn something new reading your comments. Could you explain why an engine always stops on the same spot ? I have never heard this before, but I have just assumed that the stopping point of an engine was random over the 360 deg. of revolution. I suppose that would also apply to other engines like V8's. Thanks. TimK
