I have an 8N that won't run smooth unless the choke is pulled half way out. I have put a new carb on it and the problem stays the same. The engine was recently overhauled but the problem has been long standing. Any suggestions?

New means that it has never been used.

Alan..... having to pull the choke indicates a lean running situation. Assuming you got all the govenor levers correct and with a "new" carb we'll assume the throttle shaft seals are installed, the only thing left is a leaky intake manifold gasket. Try squirting some WD-40 around anyplace there is a gasket. If the engine speeds up, you found it.

Howsomever..... a couple of months ago, John tOTG, stumped the board with somewhat the same problem which turned out to be a small burnedout manifold passageway between the common exhaust and intake wall. This was really obscure, but these ol'N's have been used and abussed and exhaust manifolds have been known to burn out from stationary running.

Hope this helps..... .Dell

He didn't quite stump the whole board though. :-)

Allen, check your ignition to. Pulling the choke can appease a weak spark somewhat. though I agree with Dell that it's most likely a fuel mixture problem. Be it from improper needle position to fuel supply problem.

Just because it's new don't assume it works right. Check the adjustments. I agree on lean running. Check for leaks around carb and manifold.

Have you removed the fuel line at the carb and checked for good fuel flow? Also screen in carb.
