I own a 2N (and love it) but I would like something a little bigger to brush hog my 15 hilly acres. I would also like live PTO and live hydraulics. I have three options:

Ford 801 - $4500
John Deere 2010 - $4500
John Deere 301A - $5500

All are in about the same condition. I know this is a Ford board, but what do you think?

First off, I have owned a '44 2N for 15 years & I love it. All my trucks have been Fords. I been working on farms for over 10 years. The J.D. 301A Is an exellent tractor. Fed cows with one on the coast . J.D. seems to think thier parts are made of gold. I have proven more then once that thewy get a 300% mark up on price.I've run fords & J.D.'s& without a doubt the J.D. is the better tractor, but you pay for the little extras. Why pay more for what you don't need to get the job done. I been spending 10-12 hours a day in an 8850 J.D. getting the dirt ready to plant grain & I surely wouldn't want to do this on my 2N. ( like the a/c & AM FM stereo/ Soundproof cab.) I'm glad some farmers can afford the extra luxury. Also the resale value of a J.D. is higher.

I envy you. I enjoyed looking for used tractor for my Dad. He bought an 8n twenty years ago and about 3 years ago decided he wnted a second larger tractor for bigger tasks with a live pto. We love our Ford but felt inclined to check out all the brands for the next tractor. Because the new tractor would use a loader, power steering was a must and it was much easier to find 50 hp JD's with power steering than Fords. Anyway, I found a number of 2010's and was told by many people to stay away from them. Even a John Deere book I got at the library singled this tractor out for poor reliability and a lack of engineering time. We ended up with a '73 JD 1520 that has been great so far. It had 1700 hours on it, and we bought it from a retiring farmer for $4200. I don't know anything about the JD 301 though.

I think the JD 2010's were lemons, if your seriously considering one of these, ya better check over on the JD board..I would personally stick with the Fords..

One point you may consider: JD parts seem to be quite exensive. My buddy restored his B whilst I did my 2N and there was significant differences in parts prices. 800 vs about 3K. (and I replaced every bushing, nut and gasket there was) Not sure of 801 parts but I think they prob are similar. JD seems to rape customers on some parts.

Can't speak for the Deeres but if you are looking for live PTO the Ford 801 don't have it! It could be something such a 861 that would have live PTO with the wrong hood sticker. Check the model and serial #'s on the back left flat of the block and check it out to see what it really is. Good Luck.

The Ford 801 is a SERIES. Within that series are several models, ie, 841,851,861,871,881. Whether or not it has live PTO depends on which MODEL within the 801 SERIES you're talking about. I strongly suggest an hour or two with the link below before looking at the Ford again so you know what you're looking at for sure. Gaspump is right that it's the 861 model in the 801 series you want if you're looking for live pto.

Are you crazy? Asking a question like that on a Ford board? Just kidding,of course. I would drive all three of them, check them out as best you can, and buy the one you fall in love with.
