I think my 9N seized...It cranked twice then nothing. There was plenty of oil in it, but when we tried to roll it a little in gear and it was just all locked up.

Maybe the old girl just got tired? She is 61 after all.... Is this something that is worth spending the $$$ on to fix or should I just roll it out front and make a planter out of it? Is there much of a parts market?

Thanks...

Could be the starter.Could be the motor locked
up.That happened to my 48.Tore it down and I didnt think I was going to get the pistons out.
After finally getting them out with a 2x2 and a
big hammer I started putting new rings on.When
taking the old rings off they were breaking off
in little pieces.Frozen in place. If your starter
is not the problem (hope thats all it is)this
might be something you want to consider-Take care

The starter may well be stuck. If it is the usual way to get it unstuck is to have it on level ground with no implement attached and with one man on one back wheel and another man on the other back wheel and the transmission in high gear rock it back and forth as violently as you can till you see the fan blade turn. If it was the starter stuck you can then retry to start it. Most times it will only get stuck now and then to begin with and get worse as time goes on. It is caused by worn gear teeth on the flywheel ring gear. It will eventually have to be replaced.

Thanks for the imput fellas. I'm not too mechanical, but my buddy is a mechanic and he was surprised tht it siezed. When I push the starter button, I can hear and feel a thumping in the starter itself. Proir to all of this, it was running great! No strange noises or smoke or anything.... I guess the first thing to do is begin at the starter itself or the flywheel. My flywheel has a few teeth missing. Maybe thts the problem?

I agree with the last post, although mine has never done it, I rember my father's 8N starter jamming occasionally. What I did then was put it in high gear and rock it back and forth. That would usually do the trick. If it didn't then I would loosen the bolts and free it up that way.

You can't just tell us "It's all locked up, should I junk it?" and expect a meaningful answer.

Isolate that problem. Is the motor stuck, is the transmission stuck, what? It could be a ten-minute fix, it could be scrapyard time, but with that thin a description, it's impossible to say.

I agree with the other posts. I bet it is not the engine. I've never seen one or heard of one sieze like you described.

you can get most parts you need to bring her back to life. The dollar side of this is a different story. You might want to open up the rear end & trany houseings & see that they are alright. Once you invest in a rebuild it's to late to stop. I have a rearend houseing that just became a mailbox stand. Been a fun & cold winter project but I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel Hoping to get her painted & ready for Mule days.

It's toast. Load it on a flatbed and bring it to me.

Usually an engine gives a warning when it has problems. Even if the engine is locked up, it's salvageable. New sleeves, piston, rings, bearings, etc, will make it like new. Cost depends on who does the work, etc. I'd definitely plull the starter and make sure it's not what is locked up. Then pull the plugs and see if you can turn the engine over with starter or crank.
The tractor should be worth saving unless the sheet metal is really bad or it has other mjor mechanical problems. Just depends on how much time, work and money you want to invest in the project.

No No No. It is definitely worth spending money on. I would do the initial things to find out why it seized. I don't know what shape the machine is in or what your needs are, but a running 9N will bring at least $2,000 in almost any condition.

Worst comes to worst, you can by a rebuilt engine for $1299 exchange from CT. That $1299 + $40 in gaskets and a day and a half's work will get you the $2,000+ more for the new engine. Other option is to part it out, which is a shame if the rest is operational.

My engine had a cracked block and a few other maladies so I opted for the engine change out since I needed the tractor-it is a working tractor. I cringed a little when I got the bill, but a year later, I know I just used it for moving a good sized pile of dirt, and it was nice that it started and ran.

As far as the engine, you can rebuild it, have it rebuilt, or opt as I did. Final cost will probably be within $300 one way or another. I ordered the engine from CT, had it in two days with $40 shipping. Return of the old was prepaid. Only other parts I needed was a gasket set and a new set of head bolts.

There are a lot of ways to go and a lot of opinions, but unless the tractor is really, really, in bad shape, I think I would breathe some new life into it. With a rebuild, it will go another 60 years.

IMHO

I would tie the clutch down or have someone depress it while you try to turn the engine with hand crank or whatever. Isolate the problem. Engine or drivetrain?

sounds like the starter might be bound up on the flywheel gear. this happened to me. loosen the starter bolts to see if its stuck there. the ring gear teeth wear out, and the bendix jams up. the ring gear is replaceable, but you gatta split the tractor. good time to do the clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing. post your results. mike
