Hi Guys

I'm looking for info/opinions on Ford 600 tractors. I own a 2N with a Zane Thang and a trip bucket loader. Down the street there is a 600 with a down pressure loader on it for sale. The sign on it says 4000.00 firm. I have a standing offer on my 2N for 3000.00. Is it worth the money to trade up? What are the differences between to two?

Thanks for the input
Peter

I'll muddy the water just a bit. Definitely the 600 is more tractor than your current 2N. But, I am not certain that a 600 for 4k is the best deal out there for that money. If your pocket book is deeper and it's not an issue, pay 4k. Now, here's where I will muddy the water: I agree with the post that owns an 800. That is a significant jump (in the Ford tractors) from a 2N and worth the extra 1k (maybe). Although the 600 is a step in the right direction, and you are willing to pay 4k for a tractor, I would consider an 800 series with live PTO. I have an 850. I am also working on a 9N. There is a night and day difference between the two. I saw a 600 just recently working a backhoe. It had the power, and depending on your needs appeared to manuever more readily. But remember, a front loader on any of these tractors (w/o power steering) is going to command your muscles. Perhaps the 800 series models would be a better trade-up than the 600 and you ought to check any 800 series model out befor you decide.. Anyways, adding my two cents and throwing it into the muddy water. good luck.

Bye bye 2N! That's what I'd say at least. Unless there was something remarkably horrible about the 600 series machine, I'd go for it. A better machine, and prettier in my opinion.

Part of the answer to your question will depend on exactly which model 600 you are looking at. Go to the site linked below and study up. You'll definitely want to check out the sn and model number. If it's a 660 you will get a live pto with a 5 speed trans. If it's a 650 you'll get the 5 speed trans but no live pto. A 640 will have a 4 speed trans and no live pto. Get the picture? Other than those variables, the 600 will have the 134 cu in Red Tiger ohv 4 cylinder. I'm not sure but I think it's good for about 34 hp, maybe a little more. Of course you'll get live hydraulics (no more shifting into neutral and releasing the clutch to lift the 3 pt). I have the bigger 800 series which is the same tractor with a bigger engine and I really like it. I just wish I had paid more attention and gotten a live pto. As far as the loader differences, that's up to you as to how much you'll enjoy that. Only you know what you use it for. Everything being equal as to condition of the 2 units, I'd say the $1000 extra is worth it if you want a "work" tractor. The 600 won't have the same "parade appeal". Folks on this board will still answer your questions (they haven't asked to get lost yet).

I'd do it in a heartbeat. The 600 is more tractor. It still has some of the quirks of the N series, but definitely is a move in the right direction, especially with the loader. More power, stronger, better transmission

Ive used the 9n 2n and 8n over the years.I have a 640 tractor now, its got a better engine, better hydraulic system.Would not go back,Wouldnt mind owning the older model if I could afford both. The 600 has a better starter also.
