I was out dragging the pasture when all of a sudden my 8N stopped suddenly, just like you had turned the key off. After checking power all the way to the distributor, I took the dist cover off and I think everything I'd been dragging had ended up inside the dist. Took my little battery powered air compressor out and blew the dist out and it fired right up. Now, my question is, what is the best thing for keeping all the debris out of the dist?
Anything to beat Saran wrap and rubber bands???

Norm, if a front mount distributor you could get a push fan and put on it. Helps keep snow and dirt from being sucked into the fan and blown back over the engine. My neighbor has one on his 9n and it is nice for mowing.

Last 2 years I had the same problem, went to my local FNH dealer and they looked in their computer and could find nothing, however at the time I also had a 801 Ford tractor with the plastic cover, tried putting it in the 8N and would not fit, so made my own external cover from an old tractor tube and it seems to have worked . But like the others say if you can find a plastic cover that's the route I would go. I live in Canada and don't think we have access to everything like the people in the US. Good luck in finding one.

This distributor should have a thin plastic shield behind the rotor on the rotor shaft that protects the rest of the distributor. When I take my rotor cap off all I see is the rotor and the disk/shield. Also the cap and coil should have a rubber or cork gasket where they mate to the distributor. I have never had problems with stuff in the distributor.

Norm if your 8N is of the side mount distributor style a very effective dust cover came out in '52 and is still available from C-NH at last check. Go's on under the rotor and over the points. I can remember putting the first one on our '50 8N when they came out and was amazed at how the dust in the points problem went away.

Gaspump---Was that a typo and you really meant F-NH rather than C-NH--If really C-NH thats a new one on me.-If F-NH I'd have to go to Denver to find one I think--Anyone else you know might handle them??? Sure do appreciate your quick response----Norm(WY)

Spring 2000 N-Newsletter says "new holland has recently completed the aquisition of the case corporation, creating a company with a combined revenue of about$12 billion. The new symbol is CNH."

New Hollands privilege of using Ford in its name ran out some time ago. There is no Ford in the tractor business as of about 2 years ago. I have seen new signs at New Holland dealers that have C-NH or the reverse NH-C or similar I think most people and dealers are not sure of the new identity. At any rate the parent company is Case-New Holland.
