I WAS BUSHHOGGING TODAY WITH MY 50 8N WHEN I SMELT GAS. I LOOKED TOWARD THE CARB AND SAW THAT MY BRAND NEW INLINE GAS FILTER WAS THROWING GAS EVERYWHERE. I DONT KNOW WHAT CAUSED IT AND I GUESS I NEVER WILL BECAUSE IT AND EVERYTHING ELSE PLASTIC AND RUBBER IS MELTED AND GONE. I INSTINCTIVELY SHUT IT OFF AND REACHED FOR THE FUEL SHUT OFF BUT IT BACKFIRED AND IGNITED THE GAS AND SHE WENT UP LIKE A TORCH. I ONLY GOT THE FUEL SHUT OFF HALFWAY CLOSED WHEN THE FLAMES DROVE ME AWAY. BY THE TIME I MADE IT BACK WITH A FIRE EXTENGUISHER IT WAS TOO LATE. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE MY HEART IS BROKEN TO SEE MY TRACTOR A CHARRED HEAP. I HAD JUST COMPLETED A 12V CONVERSION AND A CARBORATOR REBUILD.OBVIOSLY THE WIRING IS WORTHLESS AS ARE THE HOSES AND BELT.BUT CAN I SAVE THE REST? I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE IT AND AT THIS TIME CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY SOMEONE TO FIX IT. SO ITS JUST ME AND I AINT NO MECHANIC. IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN THROUGH SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND CAN TELL ME WHERE TO START TO SEE WHAT NEEDS THROWIN, FIXIN OR REPLACIN I WOULD APRECIATE IT. THANKS, AND IF SHE EVER RUNS AGAIN THERE WILL BE A FIRE EXTENGUISHER ON BOARD.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE RESPONSES. IT HELPED PICK ME UP WHEN I SAW THE REPLIES. I WAS DOWN IN THE DUMPS ON SATURDAY BUT THE DAY OF GREIVING IS OVER AND IT IS TIME TO REBUILD. I WILL BE BACK ON THE BOARD BEFORE TOO LONG AS I COME ACROSS QUESTIONS AND I HAVE NO DOUBT THE ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND HERE. I UNDERSTAND BG'S SENTIMENTS ABOUT KEEPING IT ALL ORIGINAL BUT MY GENERATOR WAS BAD SO I FIGURED I MIGHT AT WELL CONVERT TO 12V SINCE I HAD TO SPEND MONEY ANYWAY. NOW THAT I HAD A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WITH THE 12V I DON'T THINK I COULD GO BACK. IT SURE WAS NICE KNOWING IT WOULD FIRE UP EVERY TIME. TOO BAD I DIDN'T HAVE 12V THIS WINTER. FOR ONCE WE HAD 18 INCHES OF SNOW IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND MY TRACTOR WOULDN'T START. IT DIDN'T GO OVER WELL WITH THE WIFE [SHE DOESN'T LIKE BEING STUCK 9OO FEET FROM THE ROAD. I DON'T MIND IT]. AS CONCERNING THE FUEL FILTER AS OF NOW I AM INCLINED TO AGREE WITH YOU, EXPERIENCE IS AN EXPENSIVE TEACHER. I PUT IT ON AT THE ADVICE OF THE FORD PARTS DEALER AND SOME OTHERS BECAUSE I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS TWO YEARS IN A ROW WITH THE CARB. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING IF YOU EVER HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE FLOAT BOWL FLOODING INTO THE AIR HOSE. IF SO WHAT DO YOU DO TO PREVENT IT. RIGHT NOW PULLIMG THE CARB APART AND GETTING DIRT OUT FROM UNDER THE FLOAT NEEDLE WOULD SEEM LIKE A VERY SMALL PROBLEM. ANYWAY THANKS AGAIN FOR THE FEEDBACK. STEVE.

Sorry about your loss. My 2N (just started calling her "Jenny")is like family.....

As for the fuel, that is why you have to shut the gas off when you are done. My float works good, but oce I parked her on a side hill. When I came back, gas was leaking everywhere. It had made it into the oil....what a mess. So now, if I'm not using the tractor, I just shut her off....it becomes a habit after a few times....

Good Luck with the rebuild. As for taking advice from a NH dealer.....well thatat's probably like expecting your ford dealer to fix your model A....probably not a good idea. Unless someone in service is over 60 or so.....

good Luck
Steve

SF - I'm very sorry to hear about the tragedy. At least no one got hurt though. I had the same thing happen to an 83 Ranger Pickup. It was 50 miles over warrenty when the full hose slipped off the carburator and sprayed all over the inside of the engine compartment before igniting on the altenator. One potential problem with rubber hosing is that it can slip off it's fittings. In my case, there was enough left of it to diagnose the problem. By installing a filter as suggested - below the carb - I imagine that branches and what not could reach up and grab it. I've been tempted to make this conversion on my tractor but I have too much brush, plus inconvenient exhaust pipes for a vertical exhaust system.

Best of luck - we feel for you...

Sorry to hear about the fire. I have always had the horror of this happening. I too will install a fire extinguisher on my tractor that burns gasoline.
There are some excellent places on the N board to go to find wiring diagrams etc for rewiring the tractor. I think you can even get a complete wiring harness with the 12 volt conversion to fit your model tractor by looking around on the board etc.
If you can't find it just post on the board what you need and we will be glad to help you find what you want.
That old Marvel carb is tough and a major rebuild kit will fix it. It don't have plastic stuff in or on it. (thank God) If my son weren't working towards his PH.d in polymer science I would say that plastic was an instrument of the Devil :-)

I just imagine myself having to watch my 8N burn. I get down when the water pump goes out or.... Anyway..what do you think of setting up a little restoration fund for SR's tractor? I know I've gotten a ton of free advise from the board and this might be a good way for us to help out another tractor owner. What do you think?

Sorry to hear of the loss. I'm kinda inclined to keep stuff like it was originally designed. Rubber fuel lines and inline filters are just more aggravation and a source of potential trouble. These tractors worked fine for 50-60 years with the original setup. If you decide to restore, you might consider putting things back like they were to start with. To me, the real joy of these tractors is the fact that they are so basic.
