Ok, here is where things are at: I made a big leap today. I visited a junk yard and saw lot's of 8N hoods and side pieces in all states that you can imagine. We looked for grills, discs, steering units, steering wheels, you name it. Guess what...not a single 9N grill, or hood. He said 9N hoods and parts are way gone, and cannot find them like he used to. So, here's where things are at: I'm keeping my dang hood, grill, and side pieces. Tonight, I pounded the dents out of the original lower grill, straightened up all of the vertical bars, and overall restored it well enough that my search is over. I'm going with the original parts. By the time I purchased a new hood (avg 250.00, side hood piece 150, grill 150...all in after-market metal items), I can pay a body shop and do some myself for about the same price. It's a no-brainer. The body shop man down the road came over tonight, I showed him a photo of a restored 1941 9N, and he said..."it can be done." As I pounded my grill (?!) tonight, I felt good...knowing that the character and history of this old tractor will be together after-all...seems like the right thing to do. Man, what a journey this has become! fun too. So, the morale of the story? next time you're pounding on your front grill, think of me, and know that it's the right thing to do. 9N'er

Ive been pounding my grill too. Had big dents in bottom. Im amazed at the thickness and toughness of that sheet metal. I hammered hard and the dents came out very slowly, but nicely. Im finishing it with a little plastic filler and it already looks like a million bucks. I had also considered new but am glad I did not.

We have that in common now. Sounds like the right decision...especially that 9N original grills are hard to come by. Keep pounding your grill! Fun!? isn't it? 9N'er

Way to go 9N'er. I am going through the same thing and have come to the same conclusions. I even thought about having my baby pro painted but then reconsidered; ITS A HOBBY! I want to be able to say I did it; right or wrong. I like the fact there is a bit of wear on some parts and I wonder how it got there. Every time I pull a dent or ding I wonder how and when this happened. A whole big lot of history with a 50 year old tractor. Don't forget the BEFORE abd AFTER photos. If you can post them here.
Good luck, I am sure we'll be in contact

The neat thing is that no matter what you do to that old original grille, it probably will still look better than those cheap cobby ill fitting steel rod and tin strap pieces of junk that show up on so many "restorations". JMHO

You are so right about those cheap repro grilles. I had the very unfortunate experience of having my original fall off while brushhogging a few years back, shortly after I purchased the tractor. Needless to say, I didn't notice it had fallen off until the brushhog told me about it. My well-meaning wife bought me a replacement for my birthday. I was very happy until I went to put it on and it didn't fit right, or look right, etc. I have since learned more about just how not right it looks coompared to original. It is still in the box in my barn....
