Rear axle seals, again!

I've come across a dilemma regarding outer rear axle seals on my '50 8N. It seems the replacement seals from NH are half as thick as the origonals, thus to thin to fill the "space" in the bearing retainer assembly and the stamped steel seal retainer. This situation must result in serious leakage! Is the acceptable procedure to drive the seal into the stamped retainer and run a bead of sealant around the backside of the retainer or simply fasten the seal (with gasket sealant or the like) in the bearing retainer? I'm open for suggestions. Thanks for all your help now and in the past.
