My ford 9N is grinding up the aluminum drive gear on the oil pump. I've replaced it twice. The oil bypass appears alright. But every time I change my oil there's aluminum suspended in the oil. The oil looks like metalic paint. the gear seems to go every two years. Oil pressure is fine and the crankshaft gear is ok. Help!!!!

Addition:
This question is probably better answered by Nolan or Zane since I do not have specific experience with the pump gear on the N. I have to draw on my experience on aluminum cam shaft gears that I replaced quite a few on in an other life. These gears had a fiber coating over aluminum. I allways replaced these with steel gears and then they allways were trouble free. The theory of why they used aluminum was that they were quieter..I think that was baloney and the real reason was that they were cheaper to manufacture.
So take the following advice with a grain of salt.

I gotta climb on the tractor with Claus on this one. Gears in engines made of aluminum are a misapplication of material. I just had to replace the engine in my RV because of Ford's better idea of making the timing gear of aluminum. The gear shredded, filled the oil pump, denied oil to the mains, threw two rods through the side of the block. The engine had 40,000 miles on it when it spontaneously disassembled. Only things salvagable was one head, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds and water pump. The collateral damage was magnificent. If you can find a steel gear to replace the aluminum, by all means DO IT.
My .02 cents.
Sandy

When there is a fight between aluminum and steel, steel usually wins. I would look for a distorted pump housing or something along those lines. Check the lash of the gears after you torque down the housing. There is probably an interference fit. I would expect a couple of thousands play between the gears and you probably do not have that..

The IT Manual gives the Gear Backlash as .003" to .004" If you do not have feeler gauges to check this, you may give plastigage a try... I still suspect that you have a mesh or lube problem.. Check for proper lubrication. Did someone pinch off the oil return to the govenor in some feeble way to increase oil pressure? I did not want to imply in my previous post that aluminum gears do not work so we need to look for some anomally. They are just not as robust as steel...
