12v TO 6v...now here's a switch (no pun intended)

Here's a question: my 1954 850 has a 6V system. My 9N has a 12V system. I would like to switch these, and put the 6V on the 9N and the 12V on the 850. Not being mechanically inclined, or not knowing anything about tractor electrical systems, how do i do this, and what parts do I need to accomplish this? If it is a matter of buying a new starter to fit the 850...maybe I'll just then sell or trade the 9N 12V system with someone who wants it for their 9N. I would like to remove it and replace it with an original 6V system. Now here's a switch! Evryone wants to go to 12v...and I want to go backwards! Is anyone willing to trade their 9N 6V system for my 9N 12V system? Everything is fine and works well. In fact, the battery is brand new (less than 10 starts on it...and it was the highest amp output battery on the shelf (70.00 battery). I can send all components with new wires attached, including a decent starter and generator with bracket, new distributor cap, rotor, and whatever else...as long as we can trade even. Any thoughts out there? I plan on using the 850 in the winter and store the 9N. I don't plan on using the 9N in the winter.

I like your thinking about going backwards to the 6 volt.Got a jubilee myself that I want to change back. The switch shoulnt be too hard but you will have to look it over good, you never know how somenone may have cobbled the 12 volt system in there. The parts you need should be fairly easy to obtain with all the conversions going on out there.I would hate to think all those people threw the 6 volt parts away.

Hi Ellwood. thanks for the reply. I agree (and hope) that with all of the conversions going on out there, that someone is keeping a good 6V system in a box somewhere in the shed...and would like to see it put to good use on a 9N. Jubillee huh? someday for me...a restoration on one...similar to the restoration we have seen one Steve Bastardi's new post. Many other priorities right now...house building, 9N resto, work/job, family, land clearing, as usual...not enough time...and more often than usual...not enough money.

The starter on the N is still probably 6 volt. Lots of folks go to 12 volt cause it makes the starter spin faster and crank faster. It also can compensate for low compression and bad wires. If you check the archives, you can see the various wiring diagrams for the 6 volt system. Instead of converting your other tractor to 12 volt consider replacing any or all of the wiring harness, and since it has a side distributor, convert it to an electronic ignition. I did it on my Jubilee and it sure helps. Also, if this tractor is hard to crank, have the started checked out. I had two bad spots on the armature on mine and replacing it also made a big difference. A well tuned and in good shape tractor will crank with 6 volts in the winter as well as with 12.

Hey thanks for the insights. The 9N starter has a 12V stamped on it. I guess, I'll have to see if the starters from the 850 and 9N are interchangeable. Yeah, maybe an electronic iginition on the 850 is an option. thanks.

One thought is to get a 12 volt generator. They look just like the 6 volt ones. But if they will fit might be a chore. A rebuilt 6 volt N starter costs about 150 or so depending on whether on not you have to pay a core charge.
