When my hydraulics are engaged and my plow is all the way up and I move my draft control lever to the horizontal position my plow moves to the ground. Does this mean that my draft control isn't working properly or do I need to move my touch control lever to get results? THANKS Allen

If your 12 volt alternator had in internal regulator, you might need to add a 6-volt voltage regulator or cut-out.

All Ford N's had automatic draft control. The spring loaded, upper draft control enters the hydraulic unit and operates a control valve. As ground pressure acts on the implement forcing it up additional hydraulic power is automatically applied to keep the implement down. Desired depth is set by the operator with the top link and other hitch components of the implement. The later 8N's had additional holes added to the lift rocker to provide different leverage to the automatic depth control.

The 8N had an additional position control that allowed the operator to manually adjust the height of the implement. Nice for blade work. When the lever is in the vertical position the position control overrides the depth control and allows the operator to adjust the depth of the implement.

Hope this helps in the operation of your tractor.

What it does (best I can tell) is raise the implement if it digs in too deep. This is what happens with the blade I use on my 2N.

Does the valve cause down-pressure? I sort of doubt it. I think it releases the pressure and lets the weight of the implement do the work.

If you haven't done so already, check out the article called Choosing, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower in the General Tractor Information section of the Article Archives listed under Research and Info on the left side of this page. It should be required reading for anyone using a bush hog.

Good Luck and stay safe,

John
