A second or two - no more. Ten seconds very bad, a minute and you'll be visiting a machine shop real soon. Normal oil pressure, at startup, should be 35psi, regardless of the weight of the oil or the temperature. Pressure when fully warmed up should be in the 15-25 psi range, depending on weight of oil, outside temperature and phase of the moon. Suggest that you check - the function of the oil pressure gauge. It may be stuck or sticky. Check by hooking a known good gauge to the oil return manifold on the right rear corner of the cylinder block. - the oil pressure relief valve. It may be sticking in the "open" position. - the solidity of the oil pickup tube. You can feel this by removing the drain plug and putting your fingers on the "bell" of the tube which is directly above the hole. It should feel springy, but solid. It's not uncommon for the tube to crack right at the point where it is silver-soldered into the oil pump body, causing it to suck air, lose prime, prime slowly or not at all. A cracked tube will feel "spongy" and dead. HTH llater, llamas
