i checked the voltage at the top of the coil it was 4.3 to 4.5 volts while it was cold and running good. i ran it a while and checked it when it started running bad 4.3 - 4.5 volts. i removed the distributor and changed the condensor and this time the points as dell sugested. the rocker arm on the points was worn and they were hardly opening if any. i put it back together and returned to the pasture. it had a slight missing problem when wide open but not like before this was more like fuel mixture. it was running more rough than missing. i started cutting grass and it immediately got worse. but it would idle good. i openeed the idle jet and it would run fine i cut for a while and the temp came up to 180 and it never missed. i think the firing problem is solved. but now if i adjust the carb to the manufacture specks it runs good at idle but not fast. if i adjust it to run good fast it wont idle has heavy black smoke. the carberator is new Zenith i think. but the miss i have now is definately different than the first problem. maybe it was a combination of the two. any ideas are appreciated.
thanks ricky

I had similar problems with a Zenith and still haven't been able to get it to work right. A friend lent me a Marvel off of his lawn ornament '50 8N. I cleaned 20 years of rust and gunk with carburetor cleaner and a bead blaster, blew all the residue out real good and reassembled it. The tractor runs great.

FWIW & good luck

sounds like trash in a carb. jet to me. If you pull the choke out when it is running bad does it run better or worse?
