Sorry about these non-N posts, but I know some find the horse/deer story interesting, so here's the conclusion (so far):"Clinton Hurlbut, the 89-year-old hunter who accidentally shot a white horse ridden by a 12-year-old girl in western Minnesota, pleaded guilty Thursday to reckless use of a
gun. He was fined $700, ordered to pay restitution, placed on supervised probation for one year and told not to use or possess a gun for one year." (From Friday startribune.com web site; see it for details.) BTW, the horse is recovering but may not be rideable again. Somewhat ironically (remember, this is wacky Minnesota), the old guy who accidentally shot a horse gets the above punishment. The hunter who shot a state trooper in the neck (as noted in a post here earlier) won't be charged with anything.

Yup, only in America. In "some other countries" the girl would have been beaten for appearing in public without a male relative. The old man would have pleaded that he was outraged at seeing this girl *without* a male relative, and would have been let go after being warned to shoot straighter next time. The horse would have been eaten. Thanks, I'll take America.
