How much can a N-series Ford do on 20 acres (10 pasture,10wooded)? I will need a mowing deck and a front bucket. Is it too much to ask of an old tractor to work on a gentleman farm? How hard is it to find parts? Are they safe? Wht should I look for and where should I look? Any help getting started would be great.

I have a 2n with a loader on it and I have worked it quite a bit since I bought it 2 years ago. I have 10 wooded acres and I use it for grading, clearing, plowing, and excavating. I'm sure there are better, newer rigs out there but in the end I really love the machine. Power steering would be nice when the bucket's full but it's manageble and it keeps you in shape.

So far as parts, I recently did a teardown to replace broken gears (stupidity on my part), and had no trouble getting parts. The work was pretty easy and extremely rewarding.

At the price point you will be at if you don't like the rig you can probably sell it for what you paid for it.

I think you'll find its more than enough tractor for what you have. As someone else pointed out, the limitations are lack of live hydraulics and PTO. Its not that big of a deal, but you do have to think a little bit more before you do anything. Once you get used to it, you don't really think about it. Other than that, you are dealing with a 50 year old tractor. Parts are easy to find and reasonable, but you have to be willing to do a lot of the work yourself. Plan to spend some time getting to know your tractor and working out the kinks. Get the manuals (all three IT, Parts & Operators). Check out the Smith's website>Link

Good luck.

Robert, we farm about 200 acres and we have a farmall H, AC-WD, 8N and 9N and the two N's get used about 10 to one over the others. We do not have a bucket on either one, due to the lack of powersteering, I do have intentions of putting P/S on my 8N or upgrading the WD to something with a wide front end, and bucket. All that aside the N's are great little machines for small operations, but they are limited by the lack of live PTO, and HYDRAULICS. HTH

find mine ideal for my 20.buckets are limited as u have no power stearing, but still have their uses.as far as mowing or bush hoggin i find mine ideal i only caution u to not operate one of these rigs without an over running clutch.THEY ARE A MUST. they are cheap 60 bucks or so.parts are available and they're is vast aray of knowledgable people on this site that will help u with any probs u have..... ..and yes u will have probs.....usually minor and a little bit of mechanical ability can remedy them.these tractors have been workin for 50 + yrs and i believe they can work for 50 more with some tlc from thier owners.

John..... ....The Over Running Clutch (ORC) is a 1-way ratchet device that fits the tractors PTO output shaft. It prevents all that rotory inertia in those big 5' brushog blades from backdriving your tractor thru the gearbox when you clutch to slowdown to turn a corner around the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wifes car (don't ask). $60 cheap..... .....Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher
