I assume we're talking about a 6-volt positive ground system? with a 12-volt conversion, all bets are off...

You should check the generator for output. If it is too high, it may be burning out the VR.The VR should be set about 1 volt above generator ouput, or the generator should be putting out 1 volt below the VR rating. Also make sure you have a correct VR. Also make sure you have the wires of coorect gauge attached to the right places. ARM FLD BAT GND connections must be correct.

Make sure there is no grease or oil inside the VR case. Spray everything with electronic contact cleaner, don't use WD-40 or anything like that.

You should also re-polarize the generator anytime the charging circuit has been disconnected. With the ignition off and everything hooked up, touch a small jumper wire from the ARM term to the BAT term for an instant(or half-an-instant)Doesn't take much to restore residual magnetism.

When ifound the problem the armature wire and the field wires were shorted behind the toolbox . The wiring harness is thick at one spot just behind the tool box and the wiring is origional the insulation is old and brittle and had crumbled and let the wires get to gether.

sorry about the misplaced modifier: it should read: you use it, instead of calcium chloride, to load the tires!
