Wahoo!
We bought a little land a few months ago, and now I've found the tractor. Deeeeelightfull!

It's a pretty nice 8N. Didn't check the serial number, but it's clearly a later model. The owner says it's a 53, but I thought they ended in 52. It's got a second gearbox with the bent lever. I didn't try yanking it out of the transmission to see if it was an over under, but I can have hopes!

What a wonderfull machine. It's got a front end loader, new tires, sludgy gear oil, a tight front end, a broken pto, good paint, a nasty carburetor, very little rust and best of all... it wouldn't start! Perfect!!!

It's going to be running before I take it home, probably. My wife will shoot me if I bring home another broken toy I paid money for.

I really wanted cheaper, but I've been forced to readjust my thinking on finding a real real cheap tractor hiding in the woods that I could get for nothing and wouldn't cost me much to fix. S I have rationalized paying $1800 for this one.

Arg, how many more hours until Saturday? :-)

Hi Dale, The stars before and after the serial number indicate that the enigne has .040" steel sleeves in the cylinders. Diamonds (usually later N's) indicate .090" cast iron sleeves. If your engine has been rebuilt in the past it may have been overbored to accept the cast iron sleeves. If so, this is generally considered a plus since most feel that rings seat better in cast iron and they provide more even heat dissipation. They also allow the otpion of one (sometimes more) overbore when it comes to rebuilding time again. Ford frequently mixed letters and numbers in their serial # stampings. The 'I' is a 1 (one). As far as I know the only times letters 'meant' letters was the 'N' and 'NAN' (kerosene burners). Good luck with your new tractor.

Regards,
Darryl

wow, what a deal, sounds like heaven. You'll find the joy of owning an 8N is that they are easy to work on, fun to use, useful as a pocket on a shirt and just generally gives you hope that maybe you can be as robust when you are 50 plus years old!

I can believe you found something with a loader for so cheap, especially when you consider a decent 15hp riding mower is about the same price.

enjoy and keep us posted
