I can only get 85 foot pounds of torque on the main bearing cap nuts. The nut keeps turning but I see no increase in torque. I am afraid that if I torque it to the minimum 90 foot pounds I might shear off the studs. I know that the torque wrench I am using is properly calibrated and is a dial indicator so what I see is what I am getting. Do these things become work hardened and get brittle? They are 53 years old.

I would keep go with what Dave suggests new studs. Studs are generally better to use than bolts.

Sounds to me you have striped some threads.
9N6345 stud(bearing cap)-1/2"-13& 1/2-20 X 2.84" drilled number required 5
Replaced by 8N 6345-A hex head bolt 1/2"-13 X 2.44"

9N6346 Stud (bearing cap) 1/2-13 & 1/2"-20 x 3.84" drilled number required 1
Replaced by 8N 6346-A hex head bolt
1/2-13 X 3.44
It looks like the bolts are to be used with a lock washer 34849-s7 lockwasher 1/2" (7/8 X 11/64) heavy

If it was me I'd pull the studs and use bolts, but if you want to keep studs in it then they should be replaced
