I finally got to use my PTO chipper this weekend. I had a work day at my house on saturday, 5 guys showed up to trim limbs and cut trees. I ran the 8N for 6 straight hours with the chipper. The chipper is a Bearcat model with 5" capacity. The 8N and the chipper worked well together. It amazes me that my tractor, designed in 1938, can uses use implements purchased in 2002. What a great design by Harry F. The chipper has a 120 pound flywheel, lots of inertia, does not take much power to turn. When you put in a 5" branch, the rpm's drop, the governor kicks the throttle plate open, the engine starts poppin, and the rpm's come back up, just like it is suppose to work. Neat to stand back and see. The chipper is a nice tool, but it will work you to death. Philip.

Phillip, The Bearcat model you have has been on my "wishlist" for a while. That is really cool. What throttle position do you run the tractor??
How well does it work with dry wood verses green wood?? How do you keep all your neighbors from borrowing it?? HA!

Ken, I do not have a proofometer, so I run my PTO implements at about 3/4 throttle, or whatever works/sounds good. I actually goofed the 1st time I engaged the chipper. I had the sherman in step-up, which gave me a PTO speed of 950-1000 rpm. It ran like this for about an hour. Should not have done any damage. The chipper flywheel is belt driven. All shafts are supported with heavy pillow block bearings. Chipping performance was better though. I try to chip only green wood, and burn the dry, hence the burn pile in the background next to the 6000. It will chip the dry with no problem, but the manual says that dry wood will dull the blades much quicker. I really like the large inlet chute. It allows large branches with offshuts to be swallowed up. Less cutting with the saw. This is the first time the neighbors have seen it. If it keeps them from throwing crap in my field, I would let them use it. If you are that intersted in the chipper, I contacted Bearcat before the Louisville farm show. They brought the one I bought as a display floor model, then I bought it at a discount from the local distributor (John Deere). Philip.
