Friend of mine (no, really, it's not me), he's pulled his 8N engine out, says it hasn't run right in years. Took in into the shop for a rebuild. Went in a few days later and asked what cylinder liners were in the block, thin or thick? The mechanic said "Well, I guess they wuz the thin kind, 'cause dere wern't no liners innit!" Seems someone in the past simply pulled out the liners, added oversize pistons and/or rings (we think), and put 'er back together! No wonder it ran bad. Just when you think you've seen it all. eh?

A long time ago the engine in my 8N started making a lot of noise and a lot less power. I knew very little about these things but I've always fixed my own stuff. I pulled the head off and one piston was very loose.
I didn't know they had sleeves and couldn't figure out what was going on but I pulled the pan and discovered the remains of the sleeve in the bottom of the engine. Went to Ford, bought a new sleeve and put it back togther.
Run fine ever since.

Years ago TSC sold pistons and rings to fit the cylinders with the slevees removed. They didn't last long because the block wasn't hard enough to stand the wear.
