Rookie.. yes , start with a good tune up kit. Points plugs etc. Make sure the battery is strong. When you get everything together pull the plugs one at a time ground the tip to metal and see if you are geting spark when you turn it over (Key on).If no sparkie you have an electrical problem, At which point we ask Claus, llamma, and Zane to get involved :)I think the advice about a manual is sound; a lot of info in there once you figure it out
I am also a rookie and have found if I just read, ask questions, and take my time I can normally figure out a problem.
Keep us posted
regards
tom

Also take notes and put prompts in your book so the next time you can get on tract faster. It might be a long time before you get to work on it again, ha!

I changed the points ,and condenser and got her going .I will follow advise and read some beginner books,guess you have to become a mechanic sometime when you have an old tractor.
Thanks,

Rookie..... ..One N-Board contributor claims that 90% of all carburator problems are solved in the ignition system..... Problem with carburators is the adjustment screws are too eazy to get yer mitts on! hands off!!!

Since I flunked mind reading, (just ask my ex-wife), trying to instruct you via a few illustrative or descriptive words as how to service your tractors ignition system is beyound abililty. I seriously recommend the I&T FO-19 service manual, available for about $20, for your Jubbilee or failing that, at least a visit to your local libarary and a perusal of some of their general automotive manuals will give you some idea of how to approach and solve your problem. The basic trouble shooting proceedures are the same for automotive or tractor .....Dell

Well I am surely no pro but I know folks are gonna start asking questions. Are you getting a spark on the plugs? Have you looked at the points? Have you tested the coil and so on. Let us know what else you have tried and looked at and I know for a fact one of the folks on this board will have you running toot sweet.
let us know

I never worked on tractors but I now have to try and keep one going.I have a volt meter but don't know how to test coil or points.I got a Fo-19 manual with tractor but don't see any troubleshooting steps for elect. system.if there are some other sites that have information that I can read please foward them.I am not a mechanic but think I can change out bad parts if I can get some help locating them.

In that case, I'd suggest you spend a few hours in the library. Pull down every engine repair book they have, and leaf through them looking for basic diagnostics. Some have it well covered, some don't. When you find several that make sense to you, check them out and study them that night. This should get you a goodly way down the road towards basic skills and understanding. If the library has the book called "Auto Repairs for Dummies" take it home. Don't turn up your nose at it, it covers the fundamentals quite well.
