I was browsing on a New Holland Compact forum yesterday when I read a post claiming that late 52's had a slower reverse. I had not heard that before. Can anyone verify that as being so?

as i understand it ,late in 8n production they started using naa transmissions in 8n's. not all 52 have the slower reverse. however they all have a bump at lower left and rear of transmission housing, but the late 52's had a larger bump that comes almost out as far as the bolting flange.

My 52 8N, S/N 515797, has the bumpout as Soundguy describes, but I can tell you that reverse in it is faster than on my 53 Jubilee. Makes it kind of scary backing into the barn with the brush hog on it. (knew I should have made the door wider)

Yes some did.. though I'm not sure what serail number started the changeover.

My 52 8n, sn 504580 has the lower gear.

To identify the lower gearing, look on the lower left side of the body/tranny casting, around where your left foot would sit on the running board, and there should be a bulge in the casting to make room for the gear.

Very very interesting. Thanks so much for sharing that bit of information with us. I am looking for a 52 and will sure look for that abnormality.
Thanks again.
