Snowed in S.E. Michigan Monday, about 3 inches. Had the backblade on the 8N already, so when I got home, after dark, I went out to start her up and clear the driveway. Temp was down around 10 above, and since I still have the garage full of drywall and insulation for the basement project, the old N sits out back under a big brown tarp.

Shook off the snow, pulled off the tarp, got on and sat down (yow-cold!!), and she fired right up! Let 'er warm up for a spell, lifted the blade and went to work. Had the headlights on and the big rear worklight, lit up the whole 1000' driveway. Real pretty out there, and sky had cleared, so all the stars were twinkling bright. Even did my neighbor's drive.

I've got nothing against the 6-volters, but I shore do like my 12!

Paul, I too am in SE MI, we got a little over 4". My 6 volt also handled the cold just fine and dandy.
Is that long driveway paved?
Instead of plowing this time, I merely drove up and down my drive, kinda packing it down, awaiting the next dropping of the white stuff. I understand this should help make a base and not push all my gravel out of position? Have you tried this?
I sure hope we get another nice layer before my prepared "base" thaws, gotta have some fun.

Duffy, no the drive is NOT paved. Last year, when we never really got a hard freeze, I had those little skids on the blade to hold it up out of the gravel, but I never really liked them too much. Unless they're made of hardened steel, they wear down pretty fast.

I prefer to clear off the drive down to bare gravel as much as possible. The cold did a pretty good job of freezing up the dirt, so I didn't get too much gravel pushed off to the side. There's a hill down towards one end of my drive, and when the snow gets packed down into ice, that can be a trouble spot. Besids, the wife looks at the nice clean driveway and has to admit that the money spent on the ol' 8N was (maybe) worth it!

Now to get around to those tire chains I've had sitting in the corner all year....

Try adding a pair of skids on the back side of your blade. They will prevent the blade from digging in. I have a gravel drive also and have found that adding skids to my rear blade keeps the gravel from moving around. My skids have slots where they bolt onto the blade so that you can raise the skid if you need the blade to engage with the ground. My skids cost $27 delivered and are very heavy duty. You could make your own if you wish.

...and turn it around. It still moves snow and leaves the gravel where it belongs.
FWIW...don t. ...

I do that when I finally get done with the pavement. I just leave the blade in the drag position and back up to clear a path to the buildings out back. It doesn't dig in and there aren't any sudden stops. Floats across the ground nicely and the blade is heavy enough that it cleans very well.
