I've got an 8N that seems to run real rough. When the engine is idleing at different speeds, its sound like it's got a galloping noise. I've tried to adjust the jest to spec, but it doesn't help at all. Do i have a problem with the carb or is it something else like the gov. or maybe it's out of time? I thought it might be the gov, but the tractor does this in high and low speed. Any help would be appreciated.

Pedro, These old tractors will run rough if # 3 & #4
are miss-wired. Check the plug wiring, # 1 is at front near the Rad

Front Mount Dist: looking from Front

1---3
2---4

I bet folks could be more helpful if you provided more detail about the problem. Is this a new or old problem? What is the history of the tractor...ie was it sitting for 20 years? Is the tractor developing power? What effect does choke have on the engine? By galloping, do you mean that it is reving up and down rapidly, or is it making some other type of noise?

If the tractor is reving up and down, particularly under load, my guess is that you need to clean the fuel system, top to bottom, 'cause its running lean. You may have sediment in one of the three fuel screens that is restricting fuel flow. Take the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and you should get a steady stream. If you have good flow, play with the idle and power adjustments on the carb and see what happens. You might start by simply trying to enrichen the power adjustment. Also, if you are running lean, pulling the choke should smooth things out. Finally, what about the condition of you manifold. A manifold leak will cause the tractor to run lean. Spraying WD-40 or a similar flammable around the manifold while the tractor running will let you know if its sucking air other than through the carb.

Good luck.

Take the carb to governor linkage off and see if the tractor will run smoothly. If yes, you need to look at your governor. Take a look at your IT F0-4 manual - it has a good RR section on the N governor.

Good luck!

Make sure the throttle linkage is not binding anywhere, that the carb is properly adjusted(and is getting adequate fuel) and the governor is properly adjusted. Remove the throttle control arms from the governor and move the arms,(engine off) to see if there are any rough spots in the movement. If the governor won't adjust, I'd pull it off(remove 2 bolts and oil line) and inspect the flyballs and tapered race for wear.

We changed carb, gov, and linkage from a good running tractor, and still has that missing sound. Like a gallop up and down. This is at low idle, and high idle, with no load. Just sitting there. It has a sound like - "rat tat tat, rat tat tat, rat tat tat"
What else could it be.
