I ran on to this on the web and did a search to see if anybody had posted it on this site. I think that Longview is in Dell's neck of the woods. Ever hear this story Dell ?

Rick Francis' Ferguson vs. Ford Plow-Off Story

In the late forties and early fifties my Grandad had the Ford dealership in Longview Washington. Grandad swore by the 8-N tractor and was selling them as fast as he could get them in. Then along came the big boys from Ferguson in Portland OR, who were trying to get a Ferguson dealership in the Longview area. So they setup a plowoff between the TO20 and the 8N Ford. They were going to have farmers from all over the area watch the Ferguson out plow the 8N. Well, the night before the contest my Grandad and his mechanic split the 8N and installed a Sherman under gear box in the Ford without drilling a hole for the handle to stick out. They had the Sherman in low gear. The next day when the Ferguson and Ford started plowing side by side, the Ferguson started to pull ahead of the Ford, Grandad cracked the throttle and shifted to second gear. He passed the Ferguson and threw dirt from his plow in front of the Ferguson. The Ferguson rep. was very upset to say the least. Grandad would not let anyone look at the Ford, and that night they pulled the Sherman and no one knew the real story until years later..

I have heard that one before...can't say where. It's a good story, and stands up real well to repeated telling. Thanks.

Tim..... ..late 40's early 50's I was teenager going to school in Durango, Colo. Don't know anything about your story.

Because my father was a dam surveyor for US Bureau of Reclamation, I knew that there was a big dam built on the Columbia River called Bonneville (which is up river from Longview). I remember seeing flickery black and white news reels of Indians standing on rickety ol' pole frames catchin' these great big ol'fish in hoop nets on long poles as they were jumping up these big waterfalls to back up river to spawn. These waterfalls were going to disappear when the river fills behind the dam.

There I was catching lil'ol rainbow trout outta my back door in the mighty Anamas River. I could keep anything over 6". I didn't get to keep many. You know, going back to Durango on visits, that mighty Anamas river, I could almost spit across now. The difference between adult vs child perspectives.

Kelso/Longview is about 100 miles from my RockyRidge SheepStation. Their biggest crop down there is Christmas Trees. Now that the environmentalists have convinced this dumb ol'judge that spotted owls are endangered species and they need all this old growth timber so they can make love. So by judicial fiat, he destroyed an entire industry and way of life by mis-interpreting the poorly written Endangered Species Act.

Now the same self-appointed environmentalists are trying the same trick complaining that Salmon are endangered species because my little sheepies make little pills on the ground that contains nasty e-coli and that is poisoning the river water so they can't swim up it to make love where they were born. Salmon, the only endangered species you can buy on your grocery shelf..... ....Dell, bah humbug

I thought only Smokey Yunick and Junior Johnson could get away with stuff like that. Great story.

Thanks to a generous friend of my dad's, I was reading popular mechainics leftovers back in 76 at the ripe old age of 12, and actually understood how a hall effect electronic ignition sysemt worked (don't know why Ford used it thought) and read Smokey's Penzoil sponsored column every month. That was a few days after his racing glory, somebody please post more. Sunday nite, kinda slow.

Kevin most of us old folks know who those two are and what they did for the early days of racing but some of these young guys probably never heard of them.
