Since I have to buy a battery, and need winter starting ability, would an 8 volt be a good choice. Local MF dealer has one with 810 cca, says most people like them better than 6. What problems would an 8 volt cause?

Like the guys are saying, complete tune-up and get rid of them 12volt. 4 guage battery cables. Use the heavy 6 volt cables. Maybe that it is time for a complete starter rebuild, that sure will make a difference to.

Peter, When I bought my 52 8N tractor it had an 8v battery in it. Not to long after that it quit charging and I had to replace the voltage regulator. When I replaced the regulator I had to adjust the new voltage output up to about 9 volts...which was as high as it would go... by changing the tension on the voltage regulator relay in the new regulator. The tractor starts good and runs great and stays charged. I would guess that whoever put your 8v volt battery in had to do the same thing to get it to charge the battery, otherwise it would loose its charge over time. Then again, if you put in a 6 volt battery and and the regulator is outputting 9v will it boil the water out of the 6v battery? Perhaps Dell will comment on this. But then he is not a mind reader...(Grin) Jimbo TX

When i bought my 52 8N, the owner had an 8 volt battery in it.

That was part of the reason why it wasn't charging.

You could charge it up using a 6v charger.. but after one crank it was weak.

I now have my tractor back to the original 6v setup, and have no problems.

8V is a bandaid for other problems. Find and fix those instead of buying a 50$ bandaid... Chances are the fix to your 6v electrical system will be cheaper than a new 8v battery.

I complete ignition kit ( rotor wires cap plugs and coil) can be bought at TSC for about 46 bucks.

Stay away from carbon filament wires.. use the solid copper core wires.

I have an 8 volt battery, used only 5 hours or so that you can have for free if you want to come to Northern Minnesota to pick it up. Before, I found this great forum, I was told by a mechanic that it would be the smartest thing to do. The only good thing about the experience is that I found this forum as a result of all the problems that the quick little old 8 volt fix caused. That was two years agao and I am an appreciative follower of this great forum ever since.

As they say in TV games...

All set..... let's begin !

Do you want to spend big money ?
Do you want to burn the points ?
Do you want to burn the coil ?
Do you want to burn all the lights ?
Do you want to burn generator ?
Do you want to burn voltage regulator ?

If all your answers are YES then buy a 8 volt battery.

If all your answers are NO then stay away from 8 volt battery...be sure to have your wires and contacts clean bright and tigth.

There is no reason for a healty tractor to
fail to start with a 6 volt system.

This post was written with humor in mind...

Good luck !!!

Assuming that your tractor is the standard 6-volt and has not been converted to the 12-volt, I would recommend that you stay with the 6-volt battery. If you search the listings here, you will see many previous discussions on this topic. I believe that other tractor owners have experienced problems trying to use an 8-volt battery in a 6-volt tractor set-up. I have a 1952 8N with the original 6-volt set-up, and I have no problems starting the tractor in cold weather. As long as all your electrical connections are clean and tight and your battery is charged, you should have no problems.
