ok here goes a quick question, My 40 9n with a generator has been showing a charge, It is still 6 volts and even in the COLD weather we have been having in NY it starts on the second revolution, CLEAN BRIGHT AND TIGHT definatly is the way to go,, anyway I was out in the woods yesterday and noticed the gauge was not showing a charge,,, I think it always has,, but the cutout switch is working it is staying touching, {I have the cover off, it used to stick} my question is will it only show a charge when the battery needs a charging???? I hope that makes sense,,,{it does not show a discharge, and the feelers stay connected as long as the tractor is running,, it also seems to be charging,, the battery has not gone dead,, maybe the gauge is bad? pat

Pat..... .....there are several reasons your ammeter might not be showing a battery charge. Bad ammeter, not too likely, but then they're not too accurate eather.

The cut-out relay does just that, dis-connects the generator from the battery when the engine stops, it does NOT regulate the charge to the battery. The battery charge is regulated by the 3rd brush that you manually adjust at the back end of your 9N generator.

I would be more inclined to investigate the generator condition.....ie.....3rd brush adjust for a slight charge on the ammeter. Failing that, I'd open up the generator and check the brush conditions.

Then if'n I was satisfied, then I'd check the ammeter with another ammeter. Trouble is, replacement ammeters are screw terminals and OEM is a loop. You can insert the checking ammeter in series with the yellow battery charge wire at the terminal block that feeds the OEM ammeter. You'd have to use some extra wire and be an electrical engineer (grin) to do it..... ..... Dell

Dell--

Does this troubleshooting method, i.e., check and adjust third brush on generator, apply to a '51 8N w/original generator also?
