Been without elec. since last Wed. 1.2 million customers lost power in NC alone. Just got power on Monday and got cable(computer access)today. Lived in Penna. for 60 years and did not have a combined outage amounting to 5 days. We had ice storms every year. As a word of advice. Be sure to have a reliable backup heating system. Don't know how many portable generators I saw with a can of either sitting beside the non running generator.

I hope every one who got caught in the outage faired ok. I'm going to begin working on my Jubilee soon, I hope.

Lower NY state is getting it tonight. Was sleeting for a couple hours, complete with thunder and lightning, and hear snow is due soon. Car is coated with ice. The 2N is covered up, and won't be warmed up until the sun comes up! NYCity has a resevoir north of here (about 100 miles from the city), and the aquaduct passes within a mile of the house. We're fed by gravity from it. Heavy duty woodstove keeps us warm (electric heat otherwise). Gas stove. Gas bar-b-que too. Stocked freezer in 40* garage. Cellphones if needed. O.K.,,,LET IT SNOW!!!! I started the generator on the weekend. We have a monster wood stove in the basement that we can heat the pizza on or boil water, also have gas fire place that does not require electricity, got spare propane stove out of the trailer, but the darn power wont go off for more than a few minutes. Got a skiff of snow last night and it snowed for five minutes around five pm.
I was planning on just running an electrical cord in to the house rather than wyre in the fancy unit in the panel. Figure we just need a couple of lights and the fridge and freezer running. I put a tractor light on the end of a box that I put a small size 12 battery in. BC Mike C

If you have a natural gas furnace or oil heat you can use a little bit bigger generator and run the blower for heat. If you have electric I hope you have a backup source. I lived in an apartment once with only baseboard heaters. The power went out once and that was enough for me. I was raised where my chore when I got home was to fill the wood box...err.. more like wood stockpile by the back door so Mom didn't have to go to the woodshed through the snow. Wood heat is hard to beat.

Another thought: When the power went out a few years ago we ordered pizza a few times to get away from heating soup on the woodstove.

Yeh we have natural gas, got the big forced air model in the basement and a smaller one on the main floor. Also have some movable electric units, those oil filled things. When we first moved in we used the wood fireplace cause the gas did not reach us for a few years. The neighbours know we have the big wood stove so they come over to our place to warm up. I keep about one winters supply of wood on hand. It's too easy to move the magic lever for the gas unit. The low oil warning light on the generator quit and the unit shut down, so I disconnected the sender unit and it runs again. Would like to have a Honda but could not justify the price so we got a noisier 10 hp B&S about 5500 kw. BC Mike C

I work for a electrical outfit building commercial stuff. Our Residential dept. installs transfer switches to power up homes when the power goes out. If you are feeding power into the system make sure you are not sending it back down the line where the power company is working on it.

Also, seems a generator sitting around for a few months can have bad gas!! We replaced quite a few and found the only thing wrong was gunked up carbs. Kinda like an 'N' that has been sitting too long.

I think I will go throw another log in the woodstove to keep that furnace thing from spending my money. I cut, haul, split and stack my own. Keeps me warm more than once!

BTW No snow around here just lots of rain

Pays to keep a light near the generator if it dose not have electric start. I also start mine once in a while during the winter to dry out the windings, they need to be put under a load to warm them up. Mark H.

Hey Mark,

I agree, it is good to keep the windings "excited".
