I'd like to start by saying thanks for all that responded to my last post, but i still have the same problem. I have an 8N engine that is running erratic. It has like a horse gallop sound. (ratt, tatt, tatt). This tractor had a complete overhaul about a year ago, and i changed the carb, gov, and plugs from a excellent running tractor to this one, and it still does the same thing. I have adjusted the carb to spec. It runs like this in low idle, or with the trottle on high. It also runs like this with or without a load. Can anyone please help. !!!!! !!

I'm having to guess what you mean by "erratic." If it means erratic misfiring and assuming ALL your tune-up items (points, condensor, cap, plugs, etc.) are in good order and proper adjustment, then I'd suggest you make have too much play in your distributor shaft.

If the ratt tatt tatt sound is louder as soon as you accelerate, you have an exhaust manifold leak. That won't cause erractic performance UNLESS you also have an intake leak too.

Okay, the "papping" sound does sound like a leak in your manifold - either the gaskets AND/OR the manifold itself. Both can burn away over time and cracks can develop between the intake and exhaust ports of the manifold.

The up & down effect might also be the float level in the carb, but bg's advice on the gov is what you need to isolate first.

after I rebuilt my 52n I made the mistake of switchin the short rod from the gov to the carb on the wrong gov arm. It ran pretty much the way you said, switched em around and she runs great now.

When you rebuilt it, did you get the timing gear back on indexed correctly? Have you checked compression to make sure all the valves are closing? Have you checkd the distributor cap and rotor to see if it's scrubbing or missing a contact? How about the rubbing block cam? Do you have the plug wires on in the correct order 1-2-4-3?

Timing gear is indexed correctly. Distributor is new, along with the coil, points & condensor. The wires are in correct order. You see, the tractor is not missing. The only thing it's doing is revving up and down, and hit has like a galloping sound. It sounds similar to when the gov is out of control, but we changed gov and it still sounds the same. I still haven't checked he valves or the cam yet.

If you disconnect the governor and hold the throttle in one position by hand, does it do the same thing?

Mine ran rough and I do not know what caused it, but I did follow the collective wisdom on this board. I removed every wyre and made sure the ends were shiny and tight. I used a new meter and discovered that a resistor had too much resistance because a terminal had corroded. I checked every connection for zero resistance. I replaced all the wyring and distributor parts and the ignition switch. All the parts including the meter was about $200- A horse at a gallop has four beats, at a canter it has three. My wife told me that. Good luck with your tractor, they can be frustrating but they can run smooth. BC Mike C
