what is normal oil pressure for a 8n. Mine starts cold at above 30psi (gauge only goes up to 30, works at 3/4 throttle at 25-30 psi and slow idles (all the way down) hot at 15 psi.

Is the normal? Good?

Also, I get some slight transmission noise when the clutch is out in neutral as compared to no noise when clutch is depressed. The noise sounds similar to the clutch out and PTO engaged.

Is this normal, or might there be some bearing issue?

Thanks in advance

Our 2n had a similar noise in the trans/clutch for quite a few years. When I finally split it to replace the trans. (no 1st gear during our 30+ yr. ownership) I found the trans input shaft housing broken at the trans. and the pilot bearing pretty much MIA. I don't know that having 3 teenage boys bypassing the governer, popping the clutch, and trying to do wheelies over the years had anything to do with that. One of those boys provided the replacment trans and one had to do the work ;>)

If properly adjusted, the throwout bearing only turns when you step on the pedal. So if it makes noise when the pedal is up but not when you step it down its a transmission bearing. Thats why it sounds like when you engage the pto and let the clutch out, you have a pto shaft bearing noise then.

Is it a serious problem?

Does it simply need to be adjjusted (how), or does it need to be replaced. And if it needs to be replaced what does that entail and is it expensive?

Thanks
Randy

I forgot to mention that the tractor does have a Sherman Set-up. Could this be cuasing the noise or should it be silent.

Thanks
Randy

Yes, it could be any bearing behind the clutch including the sherman. The oils recomended now have a much thinner flow characteristic than the gear lube originally used. Gear lubes and hydraulic oils are rated different than motor oils but, from what I've read and experianced, 80-90 is about like 50wt engine oil. M2C53A, which was used in Fords after '65 until the 134A, was about 30wt. The 134A I believe, is somewhere between 10 and 20. That will tend to make the noise louder. Again, good luck.

Oil pressure sounds good. You're probably hearing countershaft bearing noise, or it could even be a throwout bearing. Does it change any when you partially engage the clutch pedal?

No the sound does not change if the clutch is partially engaged. either it is there or not.

As I mentioned earlier, it is not a seriously load noise, more a low vibrating hum similar to that of the PTO engaging.

If it is the countershaft bearing or the throwout bearing, does it sound as though they need to be replaced soon? which is worse? Are they both an expensive fix? What do replacements entail?

Thanks
Randy

If you can elicit no appreciable change when you partially engage the pedal, I'd be inclined to suspect the countershaft bearing(s). Replacing the bearings entails splitting the tractor, disassembling the transmission, replacing bearings, seals, worn thrust washers, broken gears, etc. Time-consuming and not for the mechanically disinclined. If the transmission functions OK and the PTO works OK, I wouldn't worry about it unless it changes drastically and quickly. If you need to split the tractor, that would be the time to inpsect and renew any worn parts, such as clutch & pressure-plate, ring-gear, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, etc.

I neglected to mention that the tractor does have a Sherman step-up. could this be causing the noise?

Thanks

Thanks. Sounds like an expensive project. I would not feel confident undertaking such a thing myself. To date the tranny and PTO seem ok. I'll keep my eye on it.

You might want to change the transmission fluid - 5 gallons of Ford spec 134d, if you haven't done it recently. Three drains, one fill. Start with the smaller drain at the rear.

The fluid level was at full and it looked clear and clean.
