I am going to get a pressure washer. I have read all the posts. All of them were very helpful, but I have a question. I don't know what size to get. I have a tractor to do as well as a 50 foot metal boat pier, that is badly rusted. I must power wash a 30,000 sq ft. cement block bldg. I want to thoroughly clean it before repainting. I'm looking at a Generac from Lowe's. Could I do better by looking at a different brand? What is the minimum psi that I should get? I will be using the sand blaster attachment for the metal jobs. A friend of mine had a 2100 psi and could not clean his commercial bbq grill. He sold it nearely unused for $100 and bought a bigger one. I want to avoid that.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's what I wanted to hear. Bigger is better.

Thanks for all the help.

I'll say the same thing as the others. Get the biggest one you can. The bigger the unit you get the faster the job will go, and that's all there is to it. Some people think they don't need one that big, or it's bigger than I could use. Nonsense! Bigger only means faster with pressure washers, and faster is better.

I would get one with a rebuildable pump, such as a CAT. I don't know of the other brands that are rebuildable but many of the pumps are basically disposable when they wear out. You can easily get parts for the CAT pump. I picked me up a 4000 psi rig at 4gpm from ProJet in Washington state. It's a nice rig and has a 13 horse honda engine with the CAT pump. Was a better price than the ones I saw in Northern Hydralics and even Harbor Freight. Only paid like 1300 dollars delivered to my house. With the cheaper pump on it it's going at 999.00 right now but you do still have to pay for delivery. Make sure you get a Turbo Nozzle with your rig, they are worth the price. I have to say that bigger is better in the case of pressure washers, if you get a small one you will always wish you had more power, goes the same when buying an air compressor. This is the ProJet site, don't know if I have it right. Link

I've talked to a guy that has a shop that repairs pressure washers. He told me the Cat pumps are the best. Be careful there are a lots of off brand pumps out there that you can not get parts for.

A pro told me 3000psi 3gal.pm This is the min. he would recomend I have a generac that I got at lowes 3000psi 3gal.pm. He also said general (not generac] pumps are the best. Went to lowes and looked at their washers. Did he say general or generac. Will I got the generac . when I got back home and looked at mt notes he said get a washer with a general pump. Well it dont have a general pump but it still works good. If I had the money I would get a bigger one. 3500psi 4gal.pm. look at this way the more pressure and water you have the farther away you can get away from what you are cleaning. It saves you back. Well I have been happy with my generac But I am on the border line at being able to supply 3gpm.
All the washers I have looked at that have a general pump are about $150 more.

Annother place to look might be Northern Tool. They have a huge selection of sizes etc.

I don't have a washer so don't know all the features to look for but like the others said, get the biggest you can afford.

I have a Delta 2200 psi with a 5 hp Honda engine on it. Sam's has 'em for about $275. If you're gonna go that size, that is the one to get--best price. I've used it for washing houses, concrete driveways, and although not as fast as the monsters, I was able to keep my per hour charge in line (wasn't spending too much time on jobs)

The one I use is a 3,000 psi 4 gpm 11 1/2 hp belt drive and run around a 1,000.00+ to buy. Real nice set up and it will strip just about anything. Get the biggest one you can or it will work to death to do the job along wit you. When you pull the trigger on this one it will push you back. Mark H.

no mark it won't push a normal sized person back, you only weigh 120 pounds soaking wet so it can move you.

Maybe not me but my arm! You run this one for about 4 hours and your arm is tired of pushing against it. When you stand on a ladder I could use some ballast so I stay balanced better. This is one of only a few drawbacks to being small. Attics and under houses, cars ect it is a plus! Mark H.
