If you opt to take it off, I would suggest you put a couple of spot welds on it to keep it from slipping in the future. IN fact, since this is probably the only time you personally will be replacing the ring gear, I would put a couple of spot welds on it regardless of whether it's a new gear or the same one turned over and re-installed. It's good insurance. My $.02

I'd have to agree with the spot welding of the ringgear. Mine started to freespin, so I took the starter off, counted the number of teeth on the ringgear, divided by 4, and spot welded 4 areas on the gear. No problems since, but it's only been about 6 months. A bit tough laying a nice bead through that dark hole in the case. I'd imagine that if the ringgear ever wears down that a new flywheel will be in order (in my case), since I kinda boogered it up with weld.

They will come off, I've done it. Customer wanted to save money, cost as much labor as a new ring gear. Some people will spend a dollar to save a dime.

Roger..... ....I'd say a new $20 flywheel starter ring was a cheap lesson. Ya ain't gonna get the wrong-way intalled shrunk-on starter ring off by heating it. 'tuther-wize even Ford would be telling ya to heat'er up. Bite the bullet, drill and cold chisel it off, and hang'er onnna the barnwall withall 'tuther throphys..... .....Dell

Should be able to remove it by heating and a little assistance from something such as a brass drift. Then just flip it over and reinstall as you did before.
