8N in sudden problem

Have a '48 8N. Replaced the carburetor, manifold and exaust system this week. Started beautifully. Hooked up my brush hog, but soon discovered that I need to work on the hydraulics. Cannot control the drop it is so bad. I was doing ok though, until I hit a low spot. Had hit a few already, but I hit another. When it slowed the blade, I pushed in the clutch to prevent damage. At the same time, the engine started acting like it was running on 1 cylinder instead of 4. Since it finally died, I cannot get it started again. Towed it back to the house for inspection and found that the overflow port for the radiator does not have a hose attached to it to run to the ground, and there was evidence of coolant sprayed out about the engine. There was not further evidence of coolant leakage. I am unsure of this situation. Could it be electrical, due to the coolant sprayed the distributor, or do I have a more serious problem? I cannot start the tractor at all, but have not tried pull starting it.

As others have suggested, you may have gotten your electrical system wet. But, in addition to drying it out, I would remove the front distributor and check the points. If they get too hot, you may have "melted", "fused", or created a "tit" on them. Any of these will result in no spark. (Yes, I have "been-there" and "done-that".)
If it was hot enough to boil over, then you may also have cooked your points.

I advocate spraying the front mounted distributor and wiring with a high quality ignition waterproofing spray available at auto parts stores. I have found this helps in the situation you found yourself in, snowstorms if you have a puller fan, and just general cleaning.

You might try jumping out your ignition resistor to see if it will start. If it does, REMOVE THE JUMPER so you don't fry the coil, but this will give it a little extra kick that might get it going.

Hope this is helpful.

Ross:
Spraying coolent will definitely effect your front mount distributor. Let it dry out and it should be ok. I have seen coolent that spills while the radiator is being filled, slop down on the distributor and keep the N from starting for an hour or so.

With regard to your hydraulics, is it possible that your position control lever (the little one under the seat) is in the down position. I find that when the lever is horizontal (draft control)the holding power of my hydraulics are not as good as when it it is vertical (position control).

Thanks for the help guys. Wondering why it sprayed coolant though. I have not had this problem before. Any ideas on why it overheated? I did just change some of the fluid out (had to to replace the manifold, I had to back one of the studs out to free the mounting nut). Could it have just been adjusting after I added it back in? As for the hydraulics, I did have the position control lever in the vertical position. As soon as I get it running again and have my shop cleaned up, I am going to dig into it. I suspect when I pull the lift cover I will find that it needs new seals and is out of adjustment.

Ross, I find my 48 N doesn't like a full radiator. It will slop it out just as you described. Does just fine about 1" to 1 1/2" low.

THanks Jim. I am going to clean the electrical system up tonight and give it another try. I am also going to route a hose from the overflow down so that I don't run into the problem again.
