PTO stops working with Brush Hog

Strange situation I need some help with. Hooked up a new 5ft brush hog mower to my 1948 Ford 8N using the slip clutch. Had to cut 3 inches off the hog's extension. Hook it all up and start mowing. However, as soon as I make a turn the mower stops running and the PTO stops turning. Also, the hog drops to the ground. Nothing will start the PTO to spin again. Once I unhook the hog from the 8N and the arms drop to the ground the PTO starts up and works fine. Do you think using chains to hold the front of the hog up instead of hydraulics would help? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Russell

The shaft is loose in the bearing housing. It probably has pushed the snapring out of it's groove inside the housing.
You will have to put the front of the tractor in a ditch to get the oil to the front or drain the oil from the lift and differential so that you can remove the four bolts that secure the pto to the differential housing. You can then see what is wrong with it.

Make sure that the pto is not so long that it is jamming in the pto when you are making turns etc. or when the bush hog all the way down. Also be sure that the telescoping part is easy to slide in and out. This is usually what damages the pto bearing retainer and even the bearing at times.

You shouldn't need stay chains on an 8N. If it is a 9N or 2N you may need a ZANE THANG to hold it at the right height. The bush hog should not be too heavy for the 8N lift to handle.
