Questions: On my 9N I am ready to install the axles, and brake drum assembly. I packed the bearings and fitted Sure Seals. Does the bearing cup retainer have a gasket placed on it before I attach and bolt the brake drum backer plate? The parts and shop manuals don't explain or show it...but there are fragments of old gasket there. Question two: What is the proper placement of the silicone gasket tube (RTV or other brand) material? Is it applied on both sides of the gasket? One side? or does it really matter?

RTV is meant to be used in place of a gasket, not with a gasket. It will make the gasket slide. A little RTV goes a long way. RTV cannot be depresses, only deformed. What you see squirted out on the outside is also on the inside. RTV seals good but the seal is easly broken by vibration. I would suggest that you buy/make a new gasket.
