I'm new at this so bear with me. I bought a 51 8N about a month or so ago and she purred like a kitten until today. I went to fire her up this morning and she wouldn't pop. I pulled the plugs and checked for spark, and had none. I have 6 Volts at the points and I checked to see if they were burnt, they look fine. I also checked for bad wires and connections and they seem fine. What do I do next before going out and buying new points, condenser, coil, etc. Can points and condenser be tested? Thanks in advance.

Andy

Forgot to mention the points can be just plain bad also. If volts don't go to zero when points are closed you aren't making contact for whatever reason and they need replacement.

Since you have 6 volts at the points that means they are open. Now turn it over slowly until points close and measure again. You should see 0 volts when the points close because they make a connection to ground. If not, rubbing block on points is worn down. You may be able to readjust but at this point you probably ought to change them and the capacitor (condensor) also. For what these parts cost a guy ought to have a spare set on hand all the time. Saves a trip to town and can also make trouble shooting easy by exchanging parts. I have a spare coil on hand all the time. Handy-
