Does anybody know what method to use to keep the points from prematurely burning after a 12V conversion. Does anybody make a pointless ignition conversion. If so, who? Thanks so much.
peace and contentment..... ..... ..... ..Ron

My 9n was converted to 12volt it has a square coil on the dist. which is a 12 volt coil and a ballast resistor between the power supply (12 volt) and the coil.
I have never had points burn with this setup. Most likely the most inexpensive way to go. Good luck.

I just installed a "transistorized" ignition on my 2N. It is an electronics kit from Radio Shack made by Velleman. It still uses the original points but only to switch a transistor on and off. The points should last as long as the rubbing block holds up because the power transistor now switches the heavy current through the coil. I've only had it on for a couple of days of mowing, but it fired up on the first crank and is doing fine so far. (you can build it for 6v or 12v)

Gary, You'll have to tell us where you get the schematics for this. Sounds like an interesting project. If it is a kit from Radio Shack, what is the # and price? L8r----Fred

How much did the radio shack kit cost?

Gary -

do the other board users a favor and post the Radio Shack stock number for this kit. Also perhaps describe how you wired it, especially cool solutions for getting the wiring out from the distributor.

I second that. I have toyed with getting one of the old CD ignition retrofits from the late 60's or early 70's, but you still have to access the points and the coil. Would be interested in knowing how to do it.

I know of no pointless conversions for the 9N, however, you may purchase a 12 volt coil which should eliminate the problem OR you can use two resistors with the 6 volt coil. I even go so far as to use a 12 volt coil with a resitor. Works fine and saves points.

Coils are available from most dealers, Farm Supply Stores or any of the sponsers of this board.

Genesse products makes an electronic conversion kit for 12v and 6v 8N's. Not sure if they make them for the front mount Fords though. We still have not installed our electronic ignition kit since converting to 12v as the tractor starts very easy now and runs great.
